Forums - Gaming Discussion - Ubisoft knows VR will fail

Lionel Raynaud knows virtual reality is going to fall flat on its face.

"VR would need to sell at least 1 million units to be viable for development," Raynaud said tonight in San Francisco during a roundtable interview attended by GameSpot.

Ubisoft PR came in and said the same thing in a nicer, more PC, way for gamers who are butthurt about his comment.

"Ubisoft is always excited about new hardware and platforms and creating innovative experiences. Lionel did mention a number at the GDC dinner, however, it was not a literal number that Ubisoft takes into consideration when looking at delivering game experiences and content for new platforms. In fact, the point he was making was that a number like that would be a leading indicator for growth and impact that could lead to success and adoption from the development community. While Ubisoft continues to work closely with all of our hardware partners, we have nothing new to share at this point in time in regard to these new VR opportunities."

VR will be big in the porn/hentai industry but it will "flop" in the games industry

I don't see the connection between the quote and "Lionel Raynaud knows virtual reality is going to fall flat on its face." It sounds like he's just saying it needs a large instal base.

Hopefully VR will do a much, much better job than the Kinect in the porn regard!

saying a product will need a certain size market for it to work isnt saying it will fail. This is actually old news and has had a couple threads about it already. but now your just bringing it up in a flame baiting way, especially with a title like that

It's not going to sell well, so there's no point in investing in it - that's what he means.

He is right, and it´s not 1mi install base, but 1mi sales for each game.

There is nothing in the quote that implies it will fail.

I hope they release those contraptions soon. That way everyone can really see wether this has a future or if its a craze.

I would rather get that over with so we can go back to focusing on great games.
