I think Nintendo will end up skipping most events. Everyone knows Nintendo is cheap and this does save them a lot of money. How much do you think a Nintendo Direct costs in comparison to a press event?

Barely anything, Iwata probably has a green screen in his office.

In this day and age, with the Internet, ignorance is a choice! And they're still choosing Ignorance! - Dr. Filthy Frank

The issue is that they generally don't have anything to show at any event that isn't E3 anymore, though skipping is not the best thing unless they've found other (perhaps more egalitarian?) avenues for getting demo stations out there (another run with Best Buy would be cool).

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Hopefully this means there is a Nintendo Direct soon!

Nintendo directs certainly don't cost much, if anything really, but they also don't reach many people outside of the core audience that is already supporting nintendo.  For them it's a nice, intimate look into what the company is doing but it's not going to do much to bring many others into the fold.  There is probably some happy medium out there for nintendo in regards to these media events.

Is this news? I mean they skip 90% of events anyway, and they have there own (nintendo directs)

They'd better not skip E3, they need to bring their A game, if they do another Nintendo Direct for E3 instead of a proper press conference they're going to screw themselves.

This, it was so stupid of them to skip it last year since they had Mario Kart 8 reveal, SSB reveal, SM3DW reveal, any several trailers including Bayonetta 2, X, DK, etc.  I can't remember when SMTxFE and Yoshie Yarn were revealed, those might have been in then too.
