I had a long play session last night, explored the Bastille from top to bottom. I've got 4 different ways to go atm but stupidly (I guess) chose the Belfry first. There dark souls showed it's annoying antics again. I was just taking a sneak peek before going back to spend my hard earned 62k souls when I get invaded while hollow. Not wanting to waste my time on that and risk my bounty, I sign out of psn, banishing the invader. (And unlike Dark souls, it doesn't quit you back to the title screen, you can keep playing).

5 seconds later the invasion message pops up again for an AI character. OK I'll just leave, nope exit closed. Homeward bone doesn't work, quit game disabled. Ok, so you want to be smart with me... I wait until the little save game flame has come and gone and I hard quit the game. Restarted the game. It accuses me of not closing the game properly but loads no problem, exit is open, so I leave, fast travel to Majula, spend souls, and back again.

Back in the belfry, same thing happens. Invaded again (still in offline mode and hollow). I look for the invader. Find him on the top with 5 more dwarfs with cross bows taking pot shots at me, while my spells are very ineffective. I try to take them on, but the delay for casting is enough already to get killed.

Second attempt, I run around, let them trail me around corners so I can pick up the loot, pull the level (bell rings) and loot a chest. That last animation takes too long and just after I pick up the items I get hit with 3 or 4 crossbow bolts, dead.

Third attempt, the gate to the mist is open. I'll go that way instead. I run into a bunch or Gargoyles... Well that's in a different league of difficulty compared to the bosses so far. I hold out for a bit, deal some damage while dodging three at a time, until 1 decides to go high and blast me with fire from above, 1 hit death. Guess I'll need some help there, although that means going online and having to do pvp most likely, bah.

Or I could first go to No man's wharf, Exile holding cells, or whatever that huge blue fort is you reach from Sinner's rise. Where should I go first.

As letsatdark said nomanswharf and huntsman corpse should be very easy for you since you just finished the lost bastille. Also you can buy a ring from a cat that lets you survive big falls, just outside of her house their is a well traverse down their for some items and a new area!

Grave of Saints and The Gutter might be a bit too much for him right now, if he's having difficulties with the Gargoyles. Even if he's playing offline, thus not being constantly invaded by the Rat Covenant on Grave of Saints, the boss there is a megamix version of the gargoyles with the bajillion rats in that extremely small area.

The Gutter....let's just say it makes Blighttown descent look a kindergarden child's play in comparison to how it is. First area in the whole game an enemy oneshotted me, even with 600 armor back then. Heck, I have 950 armor with the Ring of Steel Protection and most enemies can two shot me there. Not to mention the constant darkness and endless falls and floorboards breaking

Oh god, glad i'm not moving in that direction. Blighttown was a peace of cake if you were ready, but considering i have a dex build and i am shit at rollingi definately don't want to get one shot over and over again. And i find it really funny that we can get a titanite slab very easily in the first area of the game, meanwhile in dark souls 1 had to backtrack to an opentional area to get it.

Your first branch will be either on Sinner's or Haverst Valley then. No Man's Wharf is a easy area, especially if you have a Pharros Lockstone to use the contraption in the middle of the area to lighten up the majority of the place. It won't take you anywhere new afterwards, but it's a good place to farm souls at least.

Be mindful of the oil throwing enemies there though. If you're reliant on Fire spells, you'll set yourself on fire. Also most enemy archers use Fire arrows there too to set you on fire if you've got oil on yourself.

Caster builds will have a bit more difficulty on Gargoyles then. Keep always away from them and bring lots of casts. You're gonna fight through 6 gargoyles so you'll need most of the spells available to you. If that's still not enough, I guess co-op it's the only way to go. Try to bring someone that's melee oriented, because you'll need a tank more than anything.

I realize I'm still only at the start of the game, which is awesome :)

No pyromancy glove yet, I just levelled enough to be able to use lightning spear. I've got socerer's staff+5 with 15 great soul arrows, 60 regular ones (not very effective against bosses). Priest talisman +1, 11 lightning spears and 4 lightning storms (not all that useful either). Fire sword +2 and straight sword +2. Int faith and atn are all high (22,22,25), vigor, end, vit are lacking. Well all the other stats are 12 or lower. I had expected to find better spells by now, but so far it seems I've wasted souls upgrading int. And I really need to find some more tritanite, small and large. Seems very rare so far. I wasted it on a dagger and a robe I no longer use :/

I just used my 3rd Pharros lock stone in the bastille, guess I'll find one again for the wharf. Btw is there a place to unload all the junk I don't need?

Damn you are making me want to play as  a caster for my next playthrough!

Where did you use the 3rd stone on? I'm at the boss and i haven't found anything that needs it.

Is it true every enemy has a limited number of respawns?..how many times?

There are 2 spots for them in the bastille, 1 to get to the belfry and 1 in a large room with a statue. I used the first 1 in the forest of the giants, in a basement behind the crossbow trap.

Playing co-op with 2 other casters is awesome. Spells flying every where. I just find a ring for an extra spell slot, 6 total now, I added emit force into the mix. I couldn't resist taking a look down the well in Majula, I had just enough health now to survive the first drop with the silvercat ring. Ofcourse the game tricked me 1 step later by a beam breaking away, made it down to grave of the saints on the 2nd attempt, got another pharros lock stone as a reward.

Somehow I got summoned to another world down there, it all looked the same. I killed some stuff as a grey phantom but got overwhelmed and died. Back to my own game. Thanks for the heads up I guess, as I made it through to the second bonfire. Btw what's up with the pharros lock stone devices all over the place. I saved my 1 stone for No man's wharf. Either most of them are traps or fakes or I need a dozen stones down there. Next rat investation boss: I last quite a while, dodging/herding, using up most of my spells (damn obstacles kept getting in the way and I didn't have that extra spell slot ring yet) The overall boss health was still at 65% :/ So I switch to my weapons, get poisoned soon after, dead. I can really use a pyromancy glove here.

Still not content of leaving the gargoyles behind I go back there. First I put my summon sign down, see if anyone takes me there for some tips. Alas just down the Sinner's tower where I meet the boss. Quite a fast mover, I keep losing target, it's so dark. Then connection lost half way through, bah. Back I summon two helpers at the bonfire to get on with my goal but the game mockingly blocks of the entrance to the belfry...  Since I have them anyway I take them with me down the sinner's tower. Good practice I guess, all is easy until the boss. I get killed instantly after entering, embarrassing. Visions of Capra demon :(

Anyway Belfry was the target, so I go up to the boss door there first this time. I get invaded by 2 grey spirits. Maybe they can help me with the boss, nah they rather just kill me. They would probably vanish anyway when I enter the mist? Second attempt, I summon someone. Not sure if I should wait for a second ally. An invader joins and kills my ally right as I vanguish the invader. A couple of minutes go by, a new summon sign appears. This time I'm not waiting and enter quickly. My ally tanks while I line up the shots with lightning spear, I love how it goes through multiple targets. I manage to survive drawing their attention and a 3rd one on my back through my highly trained dodge reflexes. Victory is sweet.

I saved at the Belfry bonfire, new area to explore yay. And still No man's wharf waiting for me.

True and 10. Kinda useful since some enemies are a bit too close to bonfires for comfort. Easy to get rid of them.

10 times per bonfire strength. If you use a Bonfire Astetics, you'll respawn all enemies in their NG+ equivalent counterparts.

@SvennoJ

There's two NPCs which you can give your extra loot. One is the petrified woman in the ruins near Majula, after you unpetrify her with Branch of Yore. Any gear you unload on her, she'll equip.

The other NPC, and the better choice, is Gavlan. He'll buy off your extra pieces of loot for some nifty souls. You'll find him first on No Man's Wharf and he'll move to Door of Pharros after finishing the first area.

Gavlan's selling prices are a ripoff :/

It's better than getting 0 souls per extra items as in previous games

Drangleic Castle is one of the best locations in any Souls game ever made. Kudos to From for that particular place. Currently trying to get my bearings on Undead Crypt.

It's funny, my SL is at 134 and I still get invaded and see a lot of co-op opportunites. I guess since the game is longer and people are still trying to find the best builds, PvP SLs won't be as low as the original Dark (sweet spot was at 80 if I recall correctly).

Also, 1000 Def+ against everything rocks

This one has a nice story, good visuals and long cinematics so far.

Odd comment for a Souls game!

I found Gavlan. No Man's Wharf was no cake walk, I had to switch to shield plus sword and relearn how to fight that way. I forgot that stamina regenerates really slow with a shield up. But too many opportunities to fall in water or off things, and enemies are too fast for slow casting spells. (Plus for some reason the targeting is screwed up in this area, I practically have to stand in front of them to lock on)

Spells worked fine on the spider things anyway, easy souls. Hurray for spell merchant, I have a good arsenal now and 7 spells slots. The boss was easy with the new spells. Unfortunately the spell merchant was gone after I got the pyromancy flame. Now I can't upgarde it. Gavlan vanished as well.

I searched everywhere, found some secret walls, but no branch of yore. So I'm back to Sinner's exile or Grave of saints. No man's wharf didn't lead anywhere new. I'm currently in Grave of saints. What's up with being summoned as a grey phantom. It happened again. I go on exploring that level, kill some rats when someone else comes up and hits me. I dodge, not interested in pvp, I kill some more enemies maybe he'll get the hint I want co-op. He's still intent on killing me, I dodge, run away, heal, further explore the level. He's got a bridge down and a waterfall going. He comes at me again, dodge again, keep on looking around. This goes on for a few times until the classic souls glitch, 1 hit backstab kill from 20 meters away.

I'll try that rat infestion boss again later with anti poison herbs and regain spell uses items equipped.
