Do you think Russia should, or has a right to, take Crimea from the Ukraine?

Crimea historycally is a part of Russia. Same as 70% of Ukraine, inclyding Kiev. Also it never was a separate 'ukraine' state until 1991. So why not.

So basically, anything that was historically part of the Russian Empire, Putin has the right to go conquer?

Hard question. Ukraine shows itself as a failed state. They took one of the best parts of the USSR and in 25 years convert it into utter shit with no production, dying agriculture and no money to continue.

Speaking of Poland and Finland which was a part of the Russian Empire too - they prove that they can be succesful as a separate states, so nobody tryes to take them back. Look on the Belarus. They live their own way, but since they don't trying to press Russians on its territory or to be our enemy - nobody tryes to conquer them.

On the Ukraine matter I'd call it not 'conquer' but call a prodigal daughter back home.

By the way, did you heard that the rebels leaders claim that they should take from Russia Russian border regions and add it to the Ukraine? )

P.S. All of the above is my private opinion. Also I'd like to get political discussions out of this thread since we already have 2 topics on the Ukraine matter which is enough. I'd like this one to be more from the culture point of view.

Fair enough.  I just want to say one thing before I drop it, and if you want to get a last word in after me as well then you can trust I will accept it and won't keep it going.

Well, its a currency... ))) Some people have their savings in Euro, some in USD. When I had small savings in foreign currency I was making it in NOK, just to support neibourghs economy. :D
In fact people in their everyday life rarely using foreign currencies in Russia now. In 90-s - it was dollars all around, now - not.

Well... In my opinion people always get into something dirty on their way to big power. Same in Russia, In UK, in USA, in Japan - everywhere.
But I didn't saw here in Russia any real proofs that Putin itself is a corrupt person, aside from some bullshit and blah-blah-blah on some 40 billion USD nobody really saw.
As for government - as I understand, Goverment now are mostly people of Mr Medvedev, he's a bit different from Putin, with his on views.

Can't see the video now, writing from my work ))
And on the prodigal daughter matter...
Imagine your son get on drugs. Will it be OK for you to cut his contacts and keep him home by force? Even taking by handcuffs to the wall for some weeks if necessary? For his own good? Or you'll let him rot in some street with a dose of heroin?
People are different. I'd prefer to press down some freedom for the good of my children. Some will say - OK, its their choice to live the way they want.

One of the authors I like to read is Sergei Lukyanenko. He was born in Kazakhstan, at the time part of the Soviet Union. He now lives in Moscow. In the Soviet Union both are part of the same country, now they aren't. Doesn't that feel strange for people, that you move in one country and sudenly it is a different country?

And if I talk about Lukianenko - why Russian Science Fiction is that good, starting with the Strugatzkis.
