Just for the records. =)

PS3 did around 1.2 mln. in first 6 weeks, or 200k on average.
40 weeks witrh 200k on average = 8 mln.
Last 12 weeks PS2 sales(PS3 at 299$) - 7.5 mln.
Overall 15,5 mln. =)

Enjoy.

CrazzyMan, everytime you speak I die a little. :(

The first week in the year was a holdover from the holidays, so the sales are artifically high, and the PS3 has a weekly average of 175k in the 5 weeks after that, which comes to 7 million over 40 weeks. Also, the $299 thing is still a rumor, it didn't come true (like you said it would), and so that's still up in the air.

I REALLY want to see Japan numbers for this week, my curiosity is killing me.

We'll miss you George.

@DMeisterJ & Crazzy

A. I know this is obvious and it doesn't need saying, but if you somehow believe that the reason for the Wii's units this week isn't supply contrainment, in the US, then your fucking kidding yourselves.

B. Prodding the Nintendo fanboys is against the law.

C. Why you gotta act like a bitch?

You know good and goddamn well that last week when the Wii sold 200 plus k, we weren't all up in the forums talking shit about Sony. There are a select few assholes who deserve the treatment your giving, just make sure that you don't become like them yourselves, and start treating the Nintendo audience, which is the majority around here, with the same respect that they treat you with, and we'll all be happy.

Good job this week Sony PS3. Good job this week Nintendo DS. Besides speculation as to why the numbers were this way, which is expected, why is flaming people who are speculating, and fucking *hyuk-hyuk* laughing it up, like you don't obviously know exactly why the numbers appear as they do, not worth getting in your asses over?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

WTF? WHat just happend? The ps3 is = to wii sales in OTHERS+US, did we just enter a new dimension or something?

Its literally unreal.., and ps3 is now ahead of the ps2 at the same time frame.

I blame blu-ray.

 2008 end of year predictions:

PS3: 22M

360: 25M

wii: 40M

True. But that brings in another problem. Would consumers find Home to be as easy as Live or more cumbersome? In Live, chat is one blade click away, what would the process be like in home.

Do I have to log in, leave my home and find the avatar of the person I wanna chat with or do i log on and go to my 3d phone in my home and call my friend and then chat? Either way, would it be as easy as XBL?

I can share my thoughts.
you can chat with your friends even without home. ps3 has a chat feature.
there is also a rumor found at the sony's official website(it was mysteriously taken down after) that ps3's
in-game XMB will support normal chat and video chat.
So even if youre in home, just press the ps button and initiate chat or video chat.

Wait, you mean when aligning to launch, PS2 numbers only include Japan for the first 30 weeks or so? Because they definitely include Others' sales. The problem is that the PS3 has been out in NA 4 months longer, Others 2 months longer, and Japan similar length of time. The problem with this is that Japan is the smallest market, while NA is the largest, closely followed by Others. With 4 extra months of NA sales, and an extra month of Other sales, of course the PS3 is going to be close to PS2 sales. Hell even the GameCube came close to PS2 sales after 4 months (see here), which then followed by the release of the PS2 in NA, causing the PS2 to jump way far ahead.

Comparing each region aligned to launch in that region produces different results.

Japan: After 65 weeks: PS2 - 4.53 million; PS3 - 1.90 million
NA: After 65 weeks: PS2 - 8.34 million; PS3 - 3.91 million
Europe: After 47 weeks: PS2 - 3.32 million; PS3 - 3.72 million
Total: PS2 - 16.19 million; PS3 - 9.53 million

I don't use Total Other because the PS3 was released in a few "Other" markets when it was released in Japan, so the Total Other doesn't align up very well. It's obvious that Others is the PS3 strongest market.

So in the same timeframe the PS3 and PS2 have similar sales, but the PS3 has a unfair advantage of having the largest market for 4 extra months (the entire time), and it's strongest market for two extra months (roughly 8 weeks longer), while the PS2 only had Japan for half of the time period (30 weeks).

I will give credit to the PS3 for having a remarkable turn around, but I don't think it deserves credit for outselling the Wii simply because the Wii is supply constrained. I'll give it credit for outselling the 360 because Microsoft shouldn't even be having supply issues, so I don't think that's a good enough excuse. Now the real competition can begin!

Edit: As always, link to PS2 data, link to PS3 data. I always back up my stuff with data. ;)
