The gap is shriking...
Getting closer. At that resolution, I don't know why they don't just sacrifice a few effects instead.

It's made out that the ps4 is so vastly superior to the x1. But 960p vs 1080 is so damn close I know I couldn't tell the differance on my 50 inch screen. If 120-180p is the differance between the 2 I am more than happy, as all I've heard for the last year is how x1 looks last gen.
Halo MCC will sell 5+ million copies(including digital)
halo 5 will sell 10 million copies(including digital)
x1 will pass ps4 in USA, and UK.

960p is a 4:3 aspect ratio resolution (1280x960).
After inFamous and Destiny this is my most anticipated game for this next gen. If I had a more capable PC AND the game is modable I'd rather get it on PC but as it is I'll be getting it on PS4. At least it will be native 1080p. Too bad not 60FPS but then as long as it holds a SOLID 30FPS it'll be just fine on my TV.
I've never heard of 960p.
As brendude said, why not just tone down some effects and run it at 1080p as well?

More than likley it wont be the only difference, some effects and post processing will be different as well, but to say it would look last gen is rediculous.
The problem is that you'll still have some upscaling artifacts whether at 960p or 900p.
I would even prefer native 720p with 4xMSAA than 960p + FXAA + upscaling.
Because FXAA vaseline is almost sure for this game I am afraid.
Anyway 960p is certainly a 16/9 resolution, not sure why the OP said it was 4/3. You can upscale any resolution you want to 1080p...The one pixel difference won't be noticed.
