Forums - Gaming - What features do you hope will be added in a future 8th gen console update?

And this is for all systems.  I have a PS4 and a Wii U.  Both have things I expected but sadly haven't been implementing yet.  Feel free to post your wish list.  I'll start with the Wii U  (had more time to play get used to this one) but I'll do the PS4 later.

-Disc installs:  Full installs worked great on the Xbox 360, even improving performance in a lot of games.  I hope Nintendo allows us to use our HDDs to install games in the future.

-Customization:  I LOVE the Miiverse....but I'm also a grown man.  An option to turn on my console without an army of kiddie looking avatars running at me would be a welcome edition.  Let me put something else up there.  What?  I'm not sure yet.

-Music/Video player.  My PS3 has it.  My 360 has it.  Vita and 3DS have it (music only for 3DS).  I'm sure it's coming for the PS4.  Let me play music and movies off of my HDD on the console and stream it to the game pad.

-An option to turn off the controller screen for EVERY game or application.  I'm a huge fan of the touch screen but sometimes, like when watching Netflix, it would be cool to be able to turn it off if I don't want to  use it.  It's all about options.

-Upscaled graphics in Wii Mode, or better yet, integrate Wii Mode into the normal Wii U mode.  Wii couldn't do it with Gamecube games and Wii U probably couldn't do it either but a man can dream, right?  Give me Dolphin Emulater level graphics for my old Wii games.  I'd love to see Mario Galaxy in HD!

-Direct Messages/Game invites:  I can send a message to a friend but to do that, I have to go through MiiVerse.  It would be cool to quickly be able to say "Good game" after a round of Call of Duty or something.  The way it's set up now just takes too long and there's no onscreen notification that the message has been sent.  Nintendo has a device that lets you type extremely fast already built into the controller.  Let's take advantage of it.

-Universal Achievements/Trophies:  Useless for the most part but I still find myself trying to earn them.  Give us a universal trophy system.  Nintendo and some gamers may not see the value in them but there's something addictive about earning them and it will inspire a bit of loyalty when it comes to multi-plats.  Many times, I've purchased a game for 360 over PS3 simply because I wanted to build up my Gamerscore.  Why give up that edge to the competition?

I got more but I want to hear what the community has to say!  PS4/Xbox One fans, come on in and speak your mind.  Vita and 3DS guys, you too!  Sorry PC guys.  The bouncer has been instructed not to let you in.

Nintendo really needs to get on the ball with an achievement system, among other things... Though I imagine that to be the simplest to implement so we'll start there.

Lewis, go work for Nintendo please.

3D Blu Ray support damnit. I know I'm one of the six people around the World who buy 3D BluRays but still.

Ability to create folders for your games, the vertical list on the Ps4 is a pretty good idea but gets too long fast.

Browsing game data and saves in XMB instead of having to dwell in the settings menu to find shit.

Easier editing and cutting of shared videos.

Not obligatory sharing on Twitter/Facebook but also on your PSN wall.

Making your own PSN wall, a'la Facebook, with commenting sharing gameplay, screens etc.

Ability to dim or turn off the DS 4 light if the game is not using it actively in gameplay.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

It's not really a feature, but huge improvements in digital purchases:

  • Games start to expensive. Most 3rd party games are €70,- (€10,- more than at retailers). Sony games are €60,- which is the 'normal' price, but shouldn't digital games be cheaper than that? Or compare it to Steam: South Park: The Stick of Truth is €39,99 on Steam, but €59,99 on PSN! AC4 started at €70,- on PSN, and €50,- on Steam... Plain bullshit if you ask me! IMO, digital games should start at €49,99. Hell, I'd be happy with €54,99!
  • All digital games need to feature pre-order and pre-download. I'm going to buy inFAMOUS, but I can't pre-download it here in the EU, so I'm obviously not gonna download 24GB when the store updates... So I am going with the physical version.
  • Prices for games take too long to go down. Tomb Raider was still at it's full price 1 year after release. Bioshock: Infinite is still €59,99!
  • A lot of times, digital purchases lack pre-order bonuses. Maybe it's also a good idea to always include pre-order bonuses in the digital version, even if the person in question doesn't pre-order it?
  • If a game is availlable on both Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 (or Xbox 360 and Xbox One), give the user the option to buy both versions for an additional €10,- to €15,-! DLC (including Season Passes) also should be cross-buy, but for free!
  • And if I can just throw an idea in there: people with the digital version should get the game 1-3 days earlier. That'd be awesome!

We all know Microsoft and Sony would really like to push digital purchases, and these additions would be great! I think Sony made some great steps with digital by starting PS+'s Instant Game Collection, but it's time that Microsoft and Sony step their game up!

PS4: MP3 playback, DLNA+ video streaming/media server, external HD.
Wii U: Bluray support, GC virtual console, trophies, better distance on Gamepad if it's possible.
Xbox One: Don't care, sorry.

Only have experience with the Wii U so I'll focus on that one.

- Some kind of universal achievement system that's different from the ones found on other platforms (something less generic). Instead of a bunch of numbers you have a trophy room similar to the one in Smash Bros. Melee. Each game gives you 2-3 trophies, which you can arrange in your room. You can also collect other decorative items for the room, Miiverse and your Mii. Have a list on the wall that keeps track of high scores for games that use them, and a Hall of Fame section where you list your favourite games. Use screenshots and artwork from Miiverse/Art Academy and hang them on the wall as posters or paintings. Have a virtual game collection where you can check stats for every game you've played. And you should obviously be able to share your room with others.
If done right I think it could be a pretty cool feature that is unique and gives developers a ton of freedom in how to utilise it.

- Upscale Wii games

- Increase the VC output tenfold. Add GC titles. Add some kind of subscription service to get access to the whole VC library.

- Add Wii games to the eShop. There's really no reason for Nintendo not to add every game they have, and if they're planning HD re-releases then just give owners the option to upgrade to the new version.

- Combine WiiWare and eShop
