A new investigation puts into sharp relief the volume of shovelware games being loaded onto the App Store every day.
Fleeting mobile sensation Flappy Bird was taken off the App Store almost a month ago by creator Dong Nyugen. Over its brief stint as the most popular game in the mobile gaming world, Flappy Bird was earning Nyugen approximately US$50,000 a day in advertising revenue.
A new report by Pocket Gamer indicates that, like a flock of seagulls fighting over the chip Nyugen has thrown aside, an average of 60 Flappy Bird clones are added to the App Store daily.
The website looked at the most recent 300 Flappy Bird clones. It found that 69 were added on February 28, followed by 48 on March 1, 75 on March 2 and 49 on March 3.
That's two-and-a-half clones uploaded every hour, or one every 24 minutes.
Flappy Bird has itself been accused of cloning an earlier game, called Piou Piou.
