I'm still waiting on clarification before jumping to conclusions.

SSM just moved to a bigger building and has been hiring a lot of people. Firing people due to money being tight just doesn't seem to make sense.

It's stigs game.  Another former SSM dev that got laid off told someone who asked if it was stigs game and he responded, "yup."   Could it have been a sweet unique sci fi story........sur, but it probably had some serious flaws for them to cancel it.

And LOL at the people thinking this is the end of sony and playstation.  So much wishful thinking it's fucking funny.  SSM was ~240 people before, take away 50 and they still have ~190.   Cory barlog was definitely brought back to make a kickass god of war reboot that will revitalize the franchise.  And they probably had stigs new IP and maybe another new IP in pre-production that is still going to be made.

But hey let's keep going with the console warz shit and not feel bad for the people that lost their jobs.  Because console warz is so much more important it seems.

Phil Harrison and now a group of unproductive devs?

Microsoft really need to stop stealing Sony's best talent!

One hiring

One firing

Good for ONE set of owners.

If you consider that they probably fired the bad ones this is actually better 4 the other ;)

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Microsoft is preparing something big, one is slowly closing down offices another is slowly bolstering it's already strong development staff along with solidifying triple a content with third party developers.

So another company wanting to help out people who just lost their jobs means something big is happening with that said company hiring.   I can't even believe what I'm reading in this thread!

I prefer if you bring useful arguments instead of petty ones!!

Oh I know. It's great that Sony is bolstering its already strong development staff. I mean just look at this huge building SSM just moved into. They've been hiring a lot of talent recently to try and fill it. They reached out to irrational devs after the bad news.

Also it's great Sony is bringing third part games to their system: www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=774284

I don't know where you heard Microsoft was closing down offices though. Is that just a rumor?

Maybe Sony have sold off enough buildings they can afford to hire a few new developers. But if they don't sell enough Xperias, it's back to the chopping block with ya!

JFC.

Oh guys, now I really have to step in because some people here talking so much crap with absolutely no understanding what's actually going on at Santa Monica Studio.

So, for clarification:

SMS is moving into a bigger facility this summer - this new facility is being constructed right now from the ground up and furthermore will feature a state-of-the-art recording studio and a cutting-edge motion capture facility. Since this expansion announcement they were increasingly searching for new talented people to join the team.

And I just checked the job openings on the SMS and Sony PlayStation website and guess what: There are a bunch of job openings available, and many of them are for senior positions

A valid reason for the recent lay-off is that Santa Monica Studio simply has received pretty good applications to replace rather mediocre people with really great and talented people. And the timing could not be better, just before moving into a new facility.

What now will be interesting is whether the one of the unannounced projects really has been cancelled or not as Sony did not comment on that matter.

...seeing people arguing that Sony fired those couple persons in order to save money is really depressing. Do you know how big Sony is and how many employees they have?
Really, if you don't understand anything about economy and furthermore do not know a single thing (facts!) what is happening on the side of a developer studio, you should better be quiet and stop spreading false information.

Ms might want some inside word on what SS is working on.
