Forums - Microsoft - A Kinectless XB1 won't happen BUT...

I don't think MS wants to release a Kinectless SKU but MS is a very practical company so they will ACT somehow in a direction which is not far off. Now let's analyze...

a) They know that XB1 is too expensive currently. Regardless of what they would (politically) claim regarding the value of XB1, people just don't buy it (the claim). A price decrease WILL come. The question is when? Microsoft is also a realistic company, so they won't bring a straightforward price decrease this soon. But they will either price discriminate (perfectly legal) like bundling a free accessory or a game  (and effectively decrease the price by $60 to some), or go by unofficial price discounts (as in Europe) etc...

b) Kinect cannot go away, this would have unprecendented backlash and worse future repercussions. However, they may HIDE the Kinect. In other words, they may integrate the Kinect into the machine, which is both cost saving and more convenient. So I believe there is a good chance we will see an XB1 SKU with an integrated Kinect in the future revision sold for $399. This way, they will both keep the Kinect (and their integrity) by saving money and passing it on to the customers, the main reason for which is to boost the demand.

This way, Kinect will still be on the table for those who exclusively want its functionality but it will not be the focus and so disturbing to those who dislike it, and the machine will be cheaper to manufacture as a whole. But we need 1-2 years for this to happen (if any).

I dont understand how people think that microsoft would integrate kinect into the actual system. That causes way too many problems. Kinect has to be centered on the tv and either right below or above it. The xbox one is way too big to have to be set up like that. It wouldnt work for a ton of peoples entertainment centers. It is not an option that would or should ever be seriously considered...

So now you must keep your XBOne directly under or on top of your tv?

What if I keep my electronics elsewhere? In my home they are behind glass doors in my tv stand.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

this.   same reason the wii's sensor bar isn't integrated into the hardware.   you need to have the ability to position it in the most appropriate spot.

You wouldnt be able to use Kinect properly and you wouldnt really care either?

I expect most people already fail at having kinect in the optimal position, especially kids that have kinect in there room, where there wouldnt be enough room for motion games anyway,

I don't have the technical know-how so maybe you're right, it may never happen. But assuming that Sony was able to integrate the power inside the box and still make it smaller than XB1, running at the same temperature, so why not? Maybe not now, but it is a certainty probability in the near future, once the processing nodes come down (and AMD is significantly behind Intel right now).

to be clear tho i dont think an integrated unit is likely at all tho, certainly alot less likely than a kinectless one.

I wouldn't buy a Kinect, but if I had one I would use it a lot with Dance games. Yes, I play Just Dance, I own about 5-6 dance titles.

It doesnt have anything to do with whether or not it is possible to integrate it technically.  Im sure it wouldnt be that hard to do so.  The problem is what that would mean for the placement of the system.  Right now, the vast majority of people will put their game systems off to the side or in a cabinet, etc.  If kinect was integrated into the system, they would have to center the game system with their tv and place it either directly above or directly below the tv.  Like i said, that wouldnt work with a lot of peoples enetertainment set ups.

Next Xbox One SKU will have a built in Wii U.

(but seriously, like the Wii U Tablet controller, Kinect is too integrated into the system philosophy for it not to be bundled, and a built in Kinect would lead to it's own series of problems.)
