Forums - Microsoft - 'Cortana' on Windows Phone 15 Launguages?

Could this mean more language updates and support for the Xbox One?

Cortana for Windows Phone looks set to support 15 languages at launch

With all the information being revealed by the recently leaked Windows Phone 8.1 SDK, we're starting to get a much better idea of how the updated mobile OS will look when it launches in a couple of months. We got a hint, for example, of some of the capabilities of the new Cortana voice control experience that will feature in Windows Phone 8.1, thanks to icons extracted from the SDK

It was suggested last year that Cortana would launch in the United States first, with English language support only, with other regions having to wait for the feature to eventually become available. However, according to a leak posted on Polish site WPworld.pl, Cortana will support fifteen languages and regional variations at launch:

  • Chinese - China
  • Chinese - Hong Kong
  • Chinese - Taiwan
  • English - UK
  • English - US
  • English - India
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Polish
  • Portuguese - Brazil
  • Russian
  • Spanish - Spain
  • Spanish - Mexico

The same report claims - after having tested the Polish language pack - that each of these variants includes complete support for all commands, apparently indicating that each of these fifteen languages/regions will include a full range of Cortana features at launch.

Of course, all of this stuff remains somewhat ambiguous, and will continue to be until Microsoft finally announces Windows Phone 8.1 at its BUILD conference in April - but we'll be still be hoping to gain a few more insights through leaks and revelations before then.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

I really like mine. I was with some Droid friends the other day, and we were looking at a label that a friend had brought back from the other side of the world.  None of us could read it, and I showed them how my phone could translate.  They were blown away - it's just a basic function of Bing on a Windows Phone.

Then a song came on the music in the restaurant and we couldn't remember who sang it.  Grabbed the phone again - it listens and tells you.  I didn't think anything of it, but apparently you need and extra app or something.

I know there are many more apps out there on Droid.  I just don’t know why I need them or what I’m missing.

Which one are you going to get?

Make sure you get a Nokia Lumia. I have the 920 and it's the best phone I've ever used.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Got a l920 too but if you are in no hurry I'd wait for the MWC which starts today... And maybe built conference soon... And keep an eye on Nokia wp8.1 phones that will come later this year...

in particular the Nokia Lumia 1820... That's the beast of the year imo

I love my windows phone (lumia an earlier one) and my wife does too (a newer lumia)

This will probably result in Cortana (the software/algorithm) being used in Halo5 so you can have real conversations with A.Is

MasterChief: "Cortana is there any vehicle around?"
Cortana:"Chief according to USNC records at least one warthog remained aboard the ship)

I saw that too!  There are many people that speak English in India with a different accient that the states or the Uk.

Plus, aren't their 1652 different languages in idea?  With 30 major ones.

This is not true at all. Original polish poster just said that files are similar in size and count, so he ASSUMED that the support is the same - he had not tested it, because Cortana is not available yet.

So there is *hope* that it will work from beggining, but it may be just voice recognition, without command execution (just like in Android - excellent polish voice recognition, but no commands like "call x").
