Shuhei Yoshida: PS4 Developers to Get Past the “Uncanny Valley;” New Uncharted in Production for Three Years?

by Giuseppe Nelva (1 hour ago) 2

Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida is obviously quite proud of the PS4, and today he drew a comparison with what was accomplished with the PS3, also talking about the future of the new console in an interview on the Japanese website Inside Games.

Yoshida-san explained that with The Last of Us and Uncharted developers have come closer to expressing emotions similar to what you see in a movie or perceive by reading a book, mentioning that it’s called “uncany valley phenomenon” technically, as even if the digital character resembles a human, there’s still a little difference that makes it feel strange.

He then continued by stating that the top developers are already getting close to the point in which you have trouble understanding what is real and what is digitally rendered.

Yoshida-san brought as an example the “Dark Sorcerer” tech demo presented by Quantic Dream at E3, in which it’s hard to distinguish whether it’s live action or digital. It was also successful in challenging comedy, which is one of the genres that rely on subtle nuances the most.

He finally mentioned that while the performance of the hardware is there, it takes time for the software technology to catch up in order for developers to be able to truly reach their goals:

After the release of the PS4, the time in which developers are getting accustomed to the hardware is coming. After three years Naughty Dog’s work has finally become exciting, isn’t it?

While Yoshida-san did not mention the next Uncharted by name, that’s what we know Naughty Dog is working on, and he definitely seems to hint to the fact that it’s been in development for three years.

Timings seem to match pretty well too, considering that Uncharted 3 was released in 2011, and it’s quite likely that preliminary work on the new game of the series begun right after the launch of its predecessor.

Greatness Awaits!

Yeah 3 years would actually make sense come to think of it.

Can't wait to see official gameplay demo at E3 hopefully like every uncharted has got!!!!!

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Boooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I have a one year sig and avatar control bet with bananaking that this game doesn't come out this year. Maybe Shu is meaning it still has three years to go! ;)

It seems Sony has learnt from their mistake of announcing games too early prior to release. I wish for U4 this holiday (Ps3 got its' first uncharted a year after launch), but 2015 seems more likely at this point. GDC, E3, Gamescom and TGS should bring great things from Sony.

Please be excited

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

Im not hyped on this yet, I still think it will be delayed until 2015 and be a feb release in 2015. But I will be then.

I don't think it ever had, even a vague 2014 release date, so it's hard to say "delayed" but it definitely was expected to be the big holiday 2014 game, and unfortunately I agree with every day going by, and no new info, not to mention footage, it's less and less likely that this is a 2014 release.

Sony might get lucky, cause going by the big MS leak, Halo 5 won't make it in 2014 either, but if it would, Sony would have a hard time in US this holiday season without any heavy hitter to counter it.

Greatness Awaits!
