Forums - Nintendo - Wii U needs to be $199 to sell mainstream

Tagged games:

I reiterate; I know they can't just drop it now, I'm not saying they should. I'm saying that to sell in the long term it needs to appeal to the lower income and family consumers, and that can't happen until it hits $199. A $299 system without a Wiimote-type hook doesn't fill the niche they're trying to fill.

The WiiU needs to not be the WiiU in order to sell to the mainstream. This isn't the PS3 or 3DS where the only major hurdle was the high launch price. It's simply an unappealing product to the mass market and a cheaper price isn't going to change that.

No. The Wii sold at 250 (in more valuable dollars) for years. The XBox 360/Kinect bundle sold well for its first year at 300 (in slightly more valuable dollars). There is a difference between price and value. The Wii U's price is fine. Its value is not, at least not for the mass market.

There's simply no way to increase the value of the WII U as of now since it's probably stuck with that image forever. The best nintendo can hope for is easier and more adoption of the WII U by lowering it's price.

It needs to be a different concept and product to sell to mainstream or mass market customers, price and software be damned. Look at how far it got the Gamecube, even at 99$ it refused to move.

For the majority of Its life,  Gamecube was only $50 apart from PS2.

Nov 2001(Gamecube launch) PS2-$299 vs GC-$199

May 2002 PS2-$199 vs GC-$149

May 2003 PS2-$179 vs GC-$149

Sep 2003 PS2-$179 vs GC-$99

May 2004 PS2-$149 vs GC-$99

Apr 2006 PS2-$129 vs GC-99

The built in DVD player and vastly larger library easily made it worth an extra $50. Right now Wii U-$299 vs PS4-$399  is a similar situation as PS2/GC, for a little more money u get alot more value. Wii U at $199 would be half the price of PS4 and while an extra $100 is justifiable im not sure an extra $200 is.

Im not saying it would start to dominate PS4 or anything like that but it could def stay competitve and probably outsell Xone, until those consoles get to $299.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

The Wii U needs to not be the Wii U to sell to the mainstream. Once they drop it's price to 250$, it'll get a bump. Once they drop it to 200$, it'll already be too late and many won't care.

It's scary how similar our opening statements are... I didn't even read through the read before posting!

I don't think it will make that much of a difference but will just lose them millions.

I agree, but the lack of software is a much, much bigger problem than the price.

Heh it's like when two people wear the same thing to the dance and then just stand there awkwardly staring at each other.

I nearly brought one last week but missed out. Eb games NZ were getting rid of all the WiiU 8g stock selling at $199 NZ which converts to about $165 US.

They sold out very quickly at that price, But I don't think they stock the 8g here anymore.
