Forums - Nintendo - DKC: Tropical Freeze Review Thread (81 on metacritic)

Every Reviewer that said Retro should have made Metroid 1st has no clue what they are talking about. Heres the bottom line.

-DKCR outsold Metroid Prime 1,2, and 3 combined.

The Metroid Prime games are amazing. Maybe the best series ever. But Nintendo need's to sell consoles and Metroid Prime isn't going to do that. There is just nothing to back that up.

Some good scores there but these so called "Professional reviews" are not something we should judge the game by. I'll form my own opinion when I play it, I have a feeling I'm going to like it though!

It says Nintendo on the cover, so you should like it XD

Damn, I've read reviews similar to this:

positive:
- great gameplay
- amazing level design with lots of variety
- great visuals and music
- challenging, but not unfair

negative:
- Retro should have done a new Metroid
- the Wii U doesn't need more platformers
- Cranky Kong can't save the Wii U

7/10

RATE THE GAME, not Wii U's situation!

The reviews that review it for what it is seem to praise it where the reviews that review it for what it isn't (namely, Metroid or something "new") seem to complain

Oh well...as most of these reviews have stated (even the not so great ones), this game is better than DKCR, aka the best platformer of last gen...so I am pretty confident that this will be my favorite platformer this gen too

Which site included not being Metroid as part of their criteria?

First four paragraphs of this review:

"The first big Wii U release of the year is a new game from the makers of Metroid Prime, but is another 2D platformer really a good idea?

If there’s one thing the Wii U needs at the moment it’s probably not another platform game. When Tropical Freeze was first announced there were howls of protest, not just because the game seemed an unhelpful indulgence but because it tied up Nintendo’s only Western developer – Metroid Prime creator Retro Studios – on a game that seemingly any number of their Japanese studios could’ve made instead.

It’s rather like the chief engineer on the Titanic suddenly deciding he doesn’t want to work on fixing the engines, but would rather show off his skills as an amateur violinist by popping on deck to join the band.

Since Retro already made Donkey Kong Country Returns for the original Wii it’s obvious they are indeed highly skilled at creating 2D platformers, but we still struggle to understand why they thought this game would be a good use of their talents and resources during Nintendo’s darkest hour."

That's a pretty sad state of affairs; when 'professional' journalists struggle to understand why Retro made a sequel to DKCR, which by itself outsold Metroid Prime 1, 2 and 3 combined. Especially during Nintendo's 'darkest hour'. *facepalm*

I respect Game Informers reviews most of all. Not saying I use them to decide what to play but I find that when I play a game they call a 5/10th usually is so.

They seem very critical of this game. Strange, considering DKCR got 87 average on metacritic and this game looks better in almost every single way.

It doesn't just look better, it's really a LOT better in EVERY SINGLE WAY! Not just almost :)

I'm over halfway done with the game, collecting a lot, and unless it suddenly become horrible and boring towards the end, which I doubt, I don't get why reviewers would rate it so low.

Maybe it's a hint from reviewers who wanted Metroid.

Yep.

Keep it up, guys! I've got my "WHY REVIEWERS ARE WRONG" bingo card out, and I'm almost blacked out!

In all seriousness, though, do we have to go through this song and dance every single time?

It's a bit funny to see Gamespot and Eurogamer deducting points from DK:TF for being "repetitive" and "too similar to previous games" and then go and have a look at their scores for the Call of Duty games.

Gamespot:
Moder Warfare 3: 8.5
Black Ops II: 8
Ghosts: 8

Eurogamer:
Modern Warfare 3: 8
Black Ops II: 8
Ghosts: 7

What the hell.

You're not allowed to question their "logic." It breaks the laws of life as we know it.

Well whatever the reviewers say I (who dont really like DKC or DKCR xD.) ordered the game

I mean OMG THE MUSIC and well the game looks really nice.
