Forums - Nintendo - DKC: Tropical Freeze Review Thread (81 on metacritic)

I just read the Gamespot review and it was garbage. I have no problem with a low score if there are legitimate reasons to back it up, but the guy just trashed the game because he sucked at it.

"Donkey Kong doesn't quite land with the firm-footedness you'd expect from a Nintendo platforming mascot."

Really. DKC games have always had a slippery feel to them. That is what makes them Donkey Kong and not Mario,Kirby, or Metroid. So basically the guy took off points because he wants DK to be like every other platformer.

"It's all a bit stop and start. Platforms and enemies are laid out in odd ways, making it difficult to establish the sort of smooth, free-flowing rhythm that makes the best 2D platformers such a blast. For instance, you might be leaping across a level, picking up a good rhythm between jumps, before being stopped by a set of collapsing stone walls. In a good platformer like Tropical Freeze's predecessor, those walls would be timed to fall in rhythm with previous jumps and obstacles, letting you zip past them quickly, and make you feel like a platforming pro. But here, no matter how you approach those walls, you're stopped dead in your tracks, making you lose your rhythm."

Serious this whole paragraph is what is wrong with video games now. The guy is complaining because instead of being able to hold the run button and then right on the d-pad and just run through the level like a game designed for a 7 year old, you actually have to stop and avoid obstacles and make sure to jump on bad guys. I would love to see this guy review Mega Man, Mega Man X, Prinny, Contra, Dark Souls, or any game for that matter that is not just a speed run fest. All of this just reaffirms my belief that gamers who call Nintendo games kiddie games, just suck at them, so to cover that up they just say "Well it's meant for kids."

I find myself buying games that I'm not even sure I want just because. I think the thrill may be gone. Oh well.

man reviewers are claiming that the game is difficult (not saying it is a bad thing). Country returns gave me nightmares not sure if i can cope since i am shit with 2d platformers

difficulty is wat makes a game for me ! hate ez games

Well, some expected Metroid or something revolutionary and they are disappointed.
The game itself seems to be amazing.

Reviews should be always made by people who know the particular genre that the game belongs to.And have in mind the audience it caters too.Clickbait and nonsense reviews are everywhere nowadays. On topic I'm truly excited by this game and I have already preordered it.A sequel to the one of the best 2d platformers (together with rayman origins-legends)is a no brainer for me.

A good game, but some knocked some points down for being more of the same. Some reviewers go on a tangent about the game not being what the Wii U needs. In other words, they wanted Metroid.

And you can bet your ass that he would have complained that it was too easy for him if they just did what he described that he wanted..

DKCR sold more then Metroid Prime 1,2, and 3 combined.  I would love a new Metroid too, but Metroid has never been a big seller and it never will.   It's a 2D platformer that Nintendo made and should be reviewed as such.  I reviewers knocking Forza 5 because it isn't Metroid.  Or reviewers knocking Killzone because it isn't Uncharted.  That's just stupid.  It's the same double standard that people try to hold Nintendo to.  It's the Wonderful 101 all over again.  People complain that Nintendo should make new IP's and everything they do is a rehash.  They they make something new.  Everyone pretends that it doesn't exist.  The state of gaming right now is sorry as fuck.

They seem very critical of this game. Strange, considering DKCR got 87 average on metacritic and this game looks better in almost every single way.

Its not a mainstream game thats why. If it would be a mainstream game like a shooter then they wouldnt ask for new gameplay elements etc. But since its a platformer it will receive bad scores unless 50% of the game is new.

I remember gametrailers criticizing SkywardSword for offering nothing new. I have NEVER heard something like that for a racing game or a Fifa game (any sports game)  or COD etc.

I hope they will someday criticize a remake like Halo Anniversary or WindWaker HD for being  the same game as before. That would be hilarious...
