It's too hard, it's unambitious, and Retro should be ashamed.

It doesn't have grand set pieces,explosions,online modes and companies who have their ways with reviewers.It only has great gameplay!So it was expected that it would get such a score.

All of those I bolded out are actually much more present in Tropical Freeze than Returns :P
Much grander set pieces, in Returns there were lots of flat images in the backgrounds while in TF there are much more 3D models for it.
Explosions or things that happen, bold effects and such are also much more present and active in TF. There are also online leaderboards for each stage in time trials.
So yeah I don't get why gamespot would rate it so low. The reviewer must be a little weird.
