I have no personal experience but this professional that goes by the name 'Etho' uses Fraps for capturing, VirtualDub for editing. Mind you, he's not the best with editing and stuff but it's sufficient for him so it ought to be good enough for your son.

Uuh... I wouldn't recommend FRAPS nowadays...
