Forums - Sales - What is the Wii u and dream cast current sales comparison?

Does anyone know how dreamcast  was doing after it's first year compared to where the wii u is currently?

would be an interesting comparison

The Dreamcast did close to 10 million in 14 months i think. I would like to see a good comparison as well.

I know that the Dreamcast 2nd January in America was double the Wii U 2nd January - 100k to 49k.

Not much was stated really.

Japan's launch was bad, but US + Europe had great launch sales, but all fell apart once the PS2 released.

Took it 2 1/2 months to get to a million units in the US, same as the Wii U (Nov 24 - Feb 9 = 1,012,948).

It was around 8 million when production ended (in March of 2001).

10.6 million "shipped" when all stock had finally been sold in 2007.

That's the thing about Dreamcast. Everyone likes to shit on it as the poor-sales standard, but it could have comfortably finished in second place in Gen VI if Sega hadn't lost the ability to maintain it financially. It's own momentum would have seen it above GC's 22 and XB's 24 million, easily.

Yes. The only reason the WiiU isn't discontinued yet, while doing worse that the Dreamcast, is because Nintendo still has the financial assets to endure the bleed.

They won't for eternity though. Something will have to change in the next 3 to 5 years.

Contrary to popular belief, Nintendo is an extremely healthy company (in terms on cash in reserve at least). they can last a lot than 5 years with the current Wii U sales.

This x1000

People always like to use the Dreamcast as an example because it was discounted, but the reasons for that were not the DC sales, Sega's problems were a lot deeper.

VGC has Dreamcast's LTD  hardware sales at 8.2 million. I don't think it ever crossed double-digit territory.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Yes, i checked and that's correct. Safe to say that they've sold all the shipped units by now which would make 10,6 mio LTD.
