It makes more than fifty thousand dollars a day, it’s been downloaded more than fifty million times and you’re more than likely sick of hearing about it fifty billions times a week. We are, of course, talking about the runaway mobile hit Flappy Bird.Despite this runaway success, all has not been well for Dong Nguyen, the game’s creator. His mobile hit of early 2014 (originally released in 2013) has left the game developer stressed and frustrated. He has been constantly berated for the game’s steep difficulty curve, the very Mario-esque visuals and has been accused of using bots to raise the title’s popularity. Nguyen tweeted on February 9th that he was planning on taking the game down amidst the controversy and then made good on his claim less than 24 hours later. This left the gaming world wondering; where have we heard this kind of thing before?

After being hounded by users via social networks about everything seeming fishy, we finally got our answer and you could say that we were right about that ‘fishy’ statement. Nguyen tweeted the following a few short hours ago before deleting the posts.

In leaked e-mails between Fish and Polygon, Fish stated that “Even after the bullshit everyone has put me through, I still had a lifelong passion for making games. While I was working on Fez 2, I spent a few nights working on a mobile title that ended up being Flappy Bird. Luckily due to both games having a retro aesthetic, they were very easy to put together. I mean Fez only took around five times longer to make than Flappy Bird so the Indie Game: The Movie guys asked that I pad it out. That’s why I cried so much.”

“In the end I threw Flappy Bird on the Apple store, hired a Chinese guy to pretend to be the developer and noticed it wasn’t getting any attention. I felt so relieved, I was able to make games without some fucking assholes trying to bring me down,” he continued.

It also turns out that the game’s success was accidental. He explained the origins by saying “I sent the game to Notch as a joke but the fucking dickhead loved it. He ended up showing everyone he knew and then it kind of exploded. He loved how it looked like a Nintendo game but that was part of the joke, Europeans are fucking morons. At least I’m still making upwards of fifty grand a day I suppose, I need to pay for my Ritalin habit somehow.”

The backlash against Flappy Bird has only strengthened Fish’s hatred towards gamers. “People never hated me, they just hate on what is popular,” wrote Fish, “Fez and Flappy Bird are both popular and successful, but it was jealous people that wanted to bring them both down. This is finally vindication that people never hated me, they just hated how successful I was. My behavior had nothing to do with all these stupid fucks waiting for my downfall. Well, I hope they’re happy.”

The original e-mail also contained a PDF of Phil Fish’s planned biography he’d been writing for the past few months entitled ‘Kiss My Ass’. The book ends around the half-way mark with the words ‘Blow me’ and the other 190 pages remaining blank.
