There is a huge decline, but I wouldn't say the industry is doomed (handheld maybe) but more that MS and Nintendo haven't been able to provide gamers with what they want. Also regarding the Wii it should be noted that it had freakishly large sales in its first couple years but then dropped way earlier than the 360 or PS3, so a console doesn't need to outsell the Wii now to have a chance at beating its lifetime numbers. |
Lol, the whole "#doomed" thing was just me joking, of course the industry isn't doomed as of now, it's the first month of the year and not many notable releases have occured. Now if huge games release and numbers don't shoot up a good amount, then we can worry....
As for Wii, well people were comparing PS4's numbers and demand to Wii's and well, these numbers show that demand for Wii was much higher even past the holidays than PS4 was in the same timeframe. Anecdotal evidence or call it as you may, but there have been PS4's in the wild (though very rare to find in stores), and that's already telling that demand isn't as high as Wii was, where you couldn't find one lying around for well over a year. The cause for Wii's demise was all on Nintendo. If they were able to continue supporting it, I'm sure it wouldn't died so quickly, that was their fault. Though, I don't think any console will EVER match the insane conditions Wii was in for its first 2 years in terms of demand.

I used the December NPD number, and I used a 67% drop because thats what it looked like on the bar chart. The line graph does look to be about 285k tbh

They said "platforms". Handhelds are platforms, too. Anything else is racism! |
Sony would have included PS vita with the "ps family" if they were including handhelds. My guess is, vita is selling so low amounts that they didn't even bother with handhelds altogether. Why include something that makes you look worse in PR? Platform is probably just part of the PR to make it sound better. By platforms, they could very well be only including consoles.
Predictions for LT console sales:
PS4: 120M
XB1: 70M
WiiU: 14M
3DS: 60M
Vita: 13M

True demand was insane at the beginning, but like I've said a console doesn't need to reproduce the Wiis initial demand to beat it in the long run, it just needs to have a longer life, also I think it's kinda important to note that the Wii launched at $250 vs the PS4s $400 so that alone does make a difference.

If this is: PS4+PS3 > all other systems combined , how is this nice? This stat is only spelling doom for the console/handheld business. Absolutely horrible news unfortunetly. I guess Sony fanboys will get a kick out of this but for those who truly care about the console/handheld market, this is very bad. |
Indeed, celebrating bad sales for everything other than PS4 (because let's face it PS3 sales will be very low) is fiddling while Rome burns.
However let the premature I-told-you-so's that this generation would be a contraction from Gen 7 commence:
I told you so!
That Xb one is significantly lower than 360's first January is terrible news for Xb one AND for Gen 8 over all sales. And if Wii U's 2nd January is not much better than it's first then considering price cut and decent game library that's a disaster.
As much as I like to see PS4 on top, PS4 cannot carry console gaming entirely on its shoulders. MS needs to step up at least in the USA and achieve some measure of comparability in sales numbers. But even there all that would be doing is shifting sales from PS4 to Xb one, not actually growing the console market.
MS needs to accept that bundled Kinect was a bad idea and release a Kinectless sku. They may also need to take a loss on the Kinectless sku and sell it for $349. Specs still matter, and it's a hard sell trying to convince people to pay the same price for a console that has less power under the hood.
