Forums - Sales - There's No Way This Generation Will Sell Better than Last Gen.

I'm 99% sure the Wii-U had a horrible launch. Didn't it only sell ~500K units WW in it's first 7 days? The Wii did far better than that. Plus the Wii-U lost any momentum it had within a few weeks of launch when people who bought it realized that the system had nothing but shoddy 7th gen ports, weak hardware, and very few exclusives that were pretty underpar. Not to mention the Wii-U has gotten pretty much none of the third party support Nintendo promised. The Wii-U is a terrible example for already declaring this gen a flop because neither the PS4 nor XBone have dropped the ball like Nintendo did. The Wii-U is victim of Nintendo's failure. The PS4 will only get stronger within the next few years, just as previous PS consoles have. Sony has just done so much right with the console so far, and very few shortcomings it has are guarenteed to be fixed in the near future. Let's wait and compare PS4's first year on the market to the Wii-U's, and then complain about this gen failing.

You totally skipped over my 3DS example. Are you acknowledging that I'm right with that? Because you still can't base how consoles will play out from their releases.

Also, Wii U had a good launch. I think 600k, which is not bad for Nintendo. When compared to Sony/MS it looks small. But that wasn't my point. And who in the world said this generation was a flop? I know I didn't.

Edit: Since you edited... You kind of went off track with this, but brought it back around. Last generation was the longest yet, this generation is already showing signs of fatigue (Handhelds, Wii U, and XBO's performance in Europe.), it shouldn't last as long as generation 7. That would really stretch it out.

Well, this is a definite. Most of the casuals the Wii brought in are gone. So, this gen is most likely going to see a decrease of sales to something similar, or slightly ahead of the 6th gen. The Wii U will probably sell 25M-35M. The Xbox One will probably sit at 55M-65M. And the PS4 will probably sit at 115M-125M.

That's a high number for the Wii U.

I was thinking more along the lines of

Wii U -- 12-18 mil

Xbox One -- 40 mil

PS4 -- 120 mil

I completely agree. Mostly because of the casuals. Non-gamers who got into the Wii and the Kinect by the tens of millions last gen are most likely not looking to upgrade, so that alone will be enough to ensure that we'll see lower numbers, and that's even if the Wii U takes off among gamers and sells a solid number.

Agree 100%. Said it on other threads, you can game on anything now that has a screen. You couldn't do that in the previous generations.

Edit; And their is no major media feature ie, Ps2=DVD, Ps3=BluRay.

Netflix/Hulu as well as a major media feature too.  Those serices, I would argue, definitely helped to push sales of systems as well this past gen as well.

Certainly, just didn't bother to add that. All consoles have their share of casuals, not just the Wii.

Wii was a special case. It was bought by families/people that normally wouldn't buy consoles and PS2 was very easy to hack and get free games for it

I mainly skipped over the 3DS example because 1) it's a portable, and 2) it's actually doing pretty damn good. It did have a strong launch, but then it steadily started to die down, before starting to do amazing again, and continues to do so to this day. It's actually comparing well with DS numbers. The reason for it's original downfall were two obvious reasons: Lack of games and overpriced. Once Nintendo fixed both of those, it went up. The difference between the PS4 and the 3DS is that it has neither of those problems right out of the gate (yes the PS4 has plenty of games, and many more coming; don't BS me).

Overall, you have a point that cummalitively, this gen won't do anywhere near as good, but that's if you include portables and factor in the clearly weak numbers of Vita and Wii-U. PS4, however, will do great.

It all depends on how long these consoles will last. I expect a 6 year lifespan for the PS4 and Xbox One before AMD asks for upgrades on the innards.

Of course you would factor in the Wii U numbers. It is a home console. No?

I'm not saying the PS4 won't do great. Predicting that it'll do 153+ Million is absolutely mad, though.

i think if you put on some blinders and ignore nintendo,... playstation+xbox will show some decent growth GenOverGen. ...but not enough to overcome nintendo's dramatic collapse.

the "casuals" aren't coming back.

You cant do that casuals bought PS2 for dvd ps3 fo blursy and netflix

In the traditional markets console sales might end up stagnant or slightly down, but whether or not console sales will be down as a whole is dependend on how they do in China, India and other emerging markets in my opinion.
