Well, for most of the generation with the 360, it was cheaper than the PS3, they had a full year head start.. and somehow people who had RRODs boxes kept on buying them!
The 360 had merits, otherwise it would not have sold as much as it did either, it was easier to program for than the PS3 and it was better at many things (this is why people now say they are roughly equal when all it taken into account).
What really saved the PS3 it two fold, first Sony started releasing really nice games in 2009, their machine's OS and online features were much improved by that time too... and MS released Kinect and started pushing their studios into Kinect related games, since it sold really very well for a while...
Now that Kinect success screwed MS really hard, the people who made it a success eventually took over the xbox division and started working on the successor, having drank their own kool aid, they designed the machine around it! also bringing in the philosophy from the phone sector...
