Forums - Sony Discussion - Why death of HD-DVD will not impact Blu-ray sales????????

The end of the format war will probably give BluRay a small boost, but what will really boost sales is a $299/299EUR model of the PS3, which Sony will be releasing sometime this fall. Then things will get hectic.

i predict a $299/299EUR later this year

Blu-ray Player Sales Well Over 10 Million Thanks To Sony PS3

The Sony PS3 makes up for over 10 million of the worldwide Blu-ray players in the homes of consumers. Comparing this to the fact that Toshiba only managed to sell 1 million HD DVD players, including the Xbox 360 external HD DVD add-on drives which were sold, and it is clear why Blu-ray won the format war.

The 1 million players is domestic. So you have to compare the domestic sales of the PS3, which are about 3.5 million. Take into account the surveys that state only half that many are even aware of the blu-ray playback on the PS3, let alone even use it, and the number is actually closer to the HD-DVD players.

So the only think clear is that this is spinning the numbers.

Blu-Ray won because the BDA was smart enough to secure retail and studio support. The PS3 just held off HD-DVD until that happened, but it is not the reason Blu-Ray won.

things wontget hective, thats still 600$ for something we are paying 400$ for, and they are waiting for a price drop, and its illeagal to import a  PS3 to the UK apparently, so i think so is a bit money hungry, im suprised they are getting any sales in the UK with how they are treating them.

Anyone is crazy if they don't think that Blu Ray will take off because of this.

There are many factors.

like more stores stocking more movies

Like more studios putting everything on blu ray now becuase there is no competition - the old DVD library will begin to move over in droves.

Video rental stores will now support the one format more exclusively.

The list goes on and on.

This is what's getting me. One format. I wish I could see a poll which says do people bother with HD.

Could it be a reason only a few are taking HD is because there are two formats fighting?

Ad hominem attacks won't change the fact that mastering costs will not make this feasable for a little while. Plus Blu-Ray has yet to catch up fully with HD-DVD's standards.  There is also the fact that mainstream consumers are not as enticed as the A/V crowd. Not yet.

And those factors you claimed were happening a couple months already. So no, Blu-Ray will not take off because of this.
