Blu-ray Player Sales Well Over 10 Million Thanks To Sony PS3

The Sony PS3 makes up for over 10 million of the worldwide Blu-ray players in the homes of consumers. Comparing this to the fact that Toshiba only managed to sell 1 million HD DVD players, including the Xbox 360 external HD DVD add-on drives which were sold, and it is clear why Blu-ray won the format war.

The 1 million players is domestic. So you have to compare the domestic sales of the PS3, which are about 3.5 million. Take into account the surveys that state only half that many are even aware of the blu-ray playback on the PS3, let alone even use it, and the number is actually closer to the HD-DVD players.

So the only think clear is that this is spinning the numbers.

Blu-Ray won because the BDA was smart enough to secure retail and studio support. The PS3 just held off HD-DVD until that happened, but it is not the reason Blu-Ray won.
