Forums - Nintendo - Could Wii U still sell more 1st party software than X1 or PS4 in the 8th gen?

Nay 26 38.81%

I'm not sure if it will be able to. It is pretty likely the Wii U will not have any mega sellers.

The Wii had 7 that made up 227mil of its first party sales. Without that and with the likelyhood that it will sell much much less than the Wii lifetime I wouldn't be shocked if it moves less than 80mil first party software sales.

If the ps4 and xbox one stay ahead of their predecessors the Wii U has much of a chance. Though I guess that's a huge if.

1st party games will sell as many, if not more, copies on PS4 than on PS3.

1st party games will sell as many, if not fewer, copies on WiiU than on GC.

So I expect PS4 1st party games to outsell WiiU 1st party games.

Xbone and WiiU could go either way.

The top 7 Wii games had bundles though didn't they? Some bundles with 2 or 3 games?

Well... Both playstation and xbox also has bundles with 2-3 games as well so I dont think that makes a difference...

Well yeah, but aren't some of those 3rd Party like GTA V and Tomb Raider?

Yea but idk if it makes that much of a difference

I think Wii U and Xbox One will be close but PS4 should sell more. It's a little early to know for sure but in the Wii U's case once MK8 and Smash release we will get a clearer picture.

PlayStation Vita Japanese Software Sales (Media Create Physical/ Famitsu Digital)

Yes. Nintendo typically sells more first party games than it's competition. I don't see how this generation will be any different.

I don't even expect 1st party WII U software sales to hit even 50 million ...

It's only been a year and they're at 10 million with just 5 first party games. And Mario Kart and Smash haven't released yet. The main disadvantage they have in terms of 1st party software is that Wii Sports Club can't be tracked. You can't even really track it digitally because they split it into different sports and made it so you can buy 1 or just pay for 1 day access. That was the 80 million seller last gen, without that they won't reach Gamecube levels, but 50 million should be doable.

I see 1st party software going Nintendo>Microsoft>Sony, while hardware will be the reverse. Sony has always been weakest at selling their own software, Microsoft does okay, Nintendo does the best, and vice versa for hardware.

So Sony has the broader audience, while Microsoft and Nintendo has a narrow audience which all buys the same games?

Yeah pretty much. First party has a much better attach rate on Nintendo, and games in general have a better attach rate on Microsoft.

Makes sense why they sell more first party software than anyone else since thats the only reason people buy Nintendo systems...

Both Playstation and Xbox are esstentially "we are gonna suck up to third parties" boxes vs Nintendo is "this is our system so deal with it u lazy developers" sorta deal... And sometimes ps/x methods work and sometimes, Nintendo's methods work (sucking up usually works more obviously)

Not saying Sony/xbox don't have great first party games, just no one buys them for it in the long run

Preeeeetty much. No matter how good Sony or MS's 1st parties are, people will always buy their consoles for the 3rd party support, with the 1st party games being the delicious icing on the top. When you buy a Nintendo system you buy it for Nintendo games, because like hell anyone would buy one for the third party :P (which is one of the major factors killing the WiiU. People don't want to give up their third party games).

PS1 1st party sales 232.23 million with 104.25 million consoles
N64 1st party sales 129.95 million with 32.93 million consoles

PS2 1st party sales 185.97 million with 157.69 million consoles
NGC 1st party sales 79.47 million with 21.74 million consoles

Looking at these figures id think not
