Forums - Gaming - Hindsight II: Which Console was REALLY more powerful? Playstation or N64

In terms of power and how many polygons that can be pushed, the N64 wins hands down, but does that mean the graphics are better?  Full 3D games, the N64 beat the PSX, but what about 2D games?  2D games would look much better on the PSX than the N64.  A lot of RPGs on the PSX were developed using prerendered 3D,  so  thanks to the large amount of disc space, could have great looking games despite not being able to handle those same graphics in real time.  Resident Evil 2 is far from the best looking prerendered 3D game on the PSX and on the N64 port, the 3D models look better, but everything else looks worse.

These graphics might be prerendered, but they're also better looking  than anything on the N64, so "technically' the PSX had better graphics.

And not just prerendered games, but straight up 2D which the N64 couldn't handle well.

Also, while the PSX can't do 3D as well as the N64 can, there are better textures in the 3D environments.

So, the way I see it, the N64 can only push better 3D, while the PSX can have better textures, better 2D, and also great looking prerenedered 3D since it's pretty much 2D, and don't forget the higher quality and larger amount of audio because of the extra space as well.

N64, obviously. But PS1's cd drive enabled it to have some very nice presentation and soundtracks.

3DO < Playstation < Saturn = N64

8th gen predictions. (made early 2014)
PS4: 60-65m
WiiU: 30-35m
X1: 30-35m
3DS: 80-85m
PSV: 15-20m

N64 by a landslide

WII U // PC // 3ds XL // VITA

Perfect Dark. Turok 2 Seeds of Evil (with Expansion pack).  PS1 couldn't touch that graphically if it wanted to.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

PS1 came out ~1.5 years earlier, thats like a century in the technology world. If the N64 couldnt produce better graphics it'd be an utter failure of a console.

The Dreamcast came 1.5 years later than the N64 and it completely annihilates N64 in graphics, just sayin.

You must be a delusional Sega fanboy if you think Saturn had better graphics than PS1. It was awful at 3D graphics and that was what mattered in the 5th gen, while PS1 revolutionized gaming with 3D and polygons, Saturn had awesome 2D sprite graphics.

Are there even people who legitimately try to debate this? It's like asking whether Xbox One or Wii U is more powerful. XD

Yeah, a lot of Saturn games looked like garbage because of the bat shit crazy hardware design. Made developing for it very hard. The power is there though. 2D games are unmatched on Saturn, and on the rare occasion developers took the time to take full advantage of the console, the 3D games looked damn fine. Much better than most Playstation games.

n64, ps was good but not THAT good. plus coming from the era of game cartridges it was odd having to buy a memory card just to save games plus loading took forever.
