Forums - Nintendo - VGChartz Wii U Software Sales Update?

Will VGChartz be matching official docs?  On a side note, these sales most likely include digital, so if VGChartz is accurate on retail physical, then we've been kind of underestimating digital sales...

I'm happy to see SM3DW approaching 2 mil!  It could be over that by now, considering we're in Feb now...

If this is a repost, this thread can be deleted/locked... :P

Edit: Page 4 if you want to jump to software sales numbers, lol

VGC tracks sell-through of boxed products, so even if digital copies did not exist, VGC's numbers have to be lower than Nintendo's by default (who report shipped).

Also, the document clearly states that digital sales are included in the totals.

Yup, just saw that it says it includes "downloadable versions".

Also, if they include digital with shipped, that can't be correct... Manufacturers don't always use shipped-only figures (they're perfectly capable of getting sales numbers for their own products), and if they're including digital, digital is a "sold" unit.  Combining sold and unsold units wouldn't be professional, no?

I think those numbers are actual sales, versus "shipped"... I could be wrong, but nothing screams "shipped" in that document...  And they have to be pretty clear about stuff like that for financial reports...

I wonder how much of those Pokemon numbers are digital.

A shipped unit is a sold unit for Nintendo, just like a digital copy. Retailers buy from Nintendo, so Nintendo already got the money for their product, even if it still sits on store shelves. Whereas with a digital copy the money comes straight from the consumer. So in both cases Nintendo was already paid for their product, therefore it's not an incorrect way to report the figures in a financial statement, but the correct way.

Hmmm, perhaps this is where my misunderstanding was.  I knew retailers purchased stock, but thought they paid out a portion of their profit to the manufacturer once the item has sold.  I was always under the impression that retailers purchased stock at very low, volume prices, and then had to essentially split their profit with the manufacturer based on a percentage or cap set in a contract with the manufacturer.

I figured a manufacturer wouldn't count something as "sold" until they saw their cut from the sale, I didn't know that manufacturers were just selling them for resale by a retailer.

I know there are games for 2014 that have not been announced yet, but that list for the Wii U is anemic. Downright depressing to say the least.

"Games are a trigger for adults to again become primitive, primal, as a way of thinking and remembering. An adult is a child who has more ethics and morals, that's all. When I am a child, creating, I am not creating a game. I am in the game. The game is not for children, it is for me. It is for an adult who still has a character of a child."

Unless quoting a tracking service, publishers are quoting shipped numbers because they're unable to track their own sales. This is why they pass hundreds of thousands of dollars to NPD, chart track, etc.
