Forums - General - Hi-Def War Over--Reuters

well, the title says "looming end to DVD war", but it's over, we know it.

interestingly, Toshiba's pending decision to completely drop HD-DVD actually caused its share to jump 6%.  i guess previously investors already priced in Toshiba's HD-DVD failure.

anyhow, we'll see how this affects ps3 and 360.  people on this forum has suggested a blu-ray 360 coming.  who knows, maybe even nintendo will offer a blu-ray wii.

the Wii is an epidemic.

The article doesn't mention the PS3 and therefore doesn't give reader/investors the full story.

LordoftheNight will be here soon to dispute.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.

Great, I guess that means I'll be picking up a Bluray player in 2012.

meh, im still not bothered about it... Not gonna buy a blu ray player anyway (well, at least not for may years).

Reuters only cited NHK rumour .

TOshiba has denied today the news ,although the wording sounded more like "well yes its coming BUT we havent announced it YET " than anything .

The battle is over. Now the real war begins, and Blu-Ray is going to get squashed like a bug.

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

^ I believe you're right, I don't see many people wasting money on an expensive player to watch expensive movies when DVD gives quality which is good enough for most people (even the ones who have an HDTV). The impending recession doesn't help it either, as luxury items are not something which does well during recessions.

Blu-Ray is probably going to continue being a niche product for geeks for a few more years. Later, it might either take off or get squashed by online distribution (or something in between).

PS: Toshiba's stock went up because investors are happy that they won't waste money trying to promote it any further.
