Forums - Sales - Did MS just win the North American console market?

I thought the XBO winning NA was already a "fact?" At least for the first couple of years.

With the MS announcement today of buying the Gears of War IP from Epic, did they just seal with deal in NA this gen?

With a line up of Titanfall, Halo, Fable set to return and now a new Gears, I don’t think Sony can compete with this line up in North America. Sure, Sony will take Europe and Japan but NA is the largest market and they need to keep up in market share.

Uncharted is only one game and doesn’t sell the numbers Gears does on day 1. What else do you think Sony can do to combat this move by MS today?

With all the positive reinforcement and gloating Sony fans have done over the last 6 or 7 months, all MS has to do is stick out their wallet and crush any hopes Sony fans have to reclaim the NA market.

Whether you like Gears of War or not, you can’t argue that it doesn’t sell consoles. This gen your going to see more CoD limited edition consoles, same with Gears and Halo and the US market will eat it up. Even though it’s only early, I don’t think Sony has a chance in the US anymore.

Thoughts?

MS haven't got a 1 year head start or a 10 million lead this time. Power and price are in Sony's favour . Multi pats favour Sony. As long as Sony stay close to X1 in the USA like a couple million difference then it won't matter as world wide Sony will lead

You guys have some solid points and my thoughts are that it’s all about momentum and I think it’s starting to sway a little bit back to MS. There not making nearly as many PR mistakes anymore with really only Spencer talking. (And let’s face it Spencer is doing a hell of a job for PR and interviews)

PS4 does have a hefty price advantage but one price drop from MS will change that landscape, plus Sony can’t really afford to drop price anytime soon. Spencer did compliment Sony of being unique/creative and supporting those ways and that’s what I think they need to do.

The US market has rejected Resistance and Killzone. So shooter wise they have nothing to compete with. I’m really hoping GG’s new IP is something special like an open world WRPG style.

Sony’s first party studios other then Uncharted are not going to pull in US gamers Imo anyways. God of War is on its way out and I’m tired of them releasing collection package after collection package. Sony Santa Monica needs something new. I know they’re helping with the Order but we don’t even know what game looks like yet. It’s going to get gritty soon I think in the next year or two.

No its not. In that case even Gears is on its way out due to Judgment.

Gears is a significantly bigger franchise in the US (and elsewhere) than God of War.  (about 50% bigger in sales terms)

Not bigger in the US based on the latest installments.. Ascension: 0.96 mill vs. Judgment: 0.83 mill.

And the franchise in general (the original trilogy) is definitely not "significantly bigger" anywhere in the world.

God of War 1+2+3: 9.98 (US) + 5.65 (EU) + 0.83 (JP) + 3.06 (rest of the world) = 19.52 mill (including digital)

Gears of War 1+2+3: 11.5 (US) + 5.26 (EU) + 0.2 (JP) + 1.7 (rest of the world) = 18.66 mill (not including digital)

Halo didn't grow much as a franchise between XB and 360 so people are putting too much stock in its ability to make xbox one the winner, and it's a franchise in gradual decline. Gears was always Xb so there's no gain or loss, and Judgement was a big drop for the franchise so who knows how big future game sales will be? Fable is largely a non-issue. Titanfall is multiplatform.

So I don't see any of those games putting MS over the top in the USA individually or collectively.-

And hows ninty doing with wht won them NA 7th gen.

I don't think Gears makes a difference since most people thought Gears would always be a MS game anyways. But it's pretty likely that MS wins NA anyways.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

It will definitely change the minds of people who purchased a PS4 to play Gears of War. They will go back to Xbone I assume.

funny comparison.

Ascension and judgement dont really count now... lets not be silly.

Each main gears sold approx 6m retail, each main god of war sold between 4 and 4.5m retail.

thats significant.

Just pointing out that the US reception of the latest installments don't help your "significantly bigger". You think the next Gears will sell a lot more than Judgment and I think Gears peaked with its 2nd installment. :)

Uncharted is actually bigger than Gears of War already. Uncharted is on the rise after 3 games (and one successful Vita launch title), Gears of War is plummeting.

I'd say this is a pretty big deal for Microsoft, and a step in the right direction for them to try to take N/A away from Sony, but we don't fully know what the future has in store for both consoles yet.

I was walking down along the street and I heard this voice saying, "Good evening, Mr. Dowd." Well, I turned around and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamp-post. Well, I thought nothing of that because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name.
