Forums - Gaming - Former Sony Dev: Wii Was 100M Fad & May Not Be Repeated, Nintendo Have Done S**t Job Promoting Wii U

Pretty obvious stuff here. No one is going to try to repeat the Wii since it would be a bad idea because making a game like Wii Sports that appeals to almost everyone has a very, very high chance of flopping hard.

For Nintendo doing a bad job promoting the Wii U, It's true. I don't agree that no one wants it though. If they marketed good enough, I think it would sell great. They have games, and plenty of upcoming ones to market.

They marketed it pretty well this holiday season, at least during November/December I started seeing more Wii U ads than I had for 3DS/Wii/Wii U in about 4 years time.

The Andre Agassi Wii Sports Club commercial in particular ran here an awful lot even on the non-kids channels. I saw that probably as much if not more than any Sony ad.

Nothing wrong in that article.

Nuttin wrong there, especially the line about Nintendo not understanding Western consumers.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Sometime in 2008..."Ps2 was a fad, a cheap dvd player for family"

Hi, I'm a vgchartz lurker for the most part. But in reference to everyone commenting on the PS2 being a fad because of low PS3 sales, shouldn't the sales of the PS1 also confirm that Sony's consoles were selling better and better until the PS3, in the same way that Nintendo consoles were selling worse and worse until the Wii? If the two were similar in any way, wouldn't it just be that they were both sales anomalies based on their console histories?

Great question. We could see the PS3 and Wii as anomalies, but I like to think that they are part of the pattern itself. Sony will occasionally have a console that underperforms (like the problematic and pricy PS3), and Nintendo will occasionally have a console that explodes in sales (like the revolutionary NES and Wii). The problem Nintendo is currently having with Wii U, however, is that the console is resuming the downward trend as oppose to restarting it. Wii U doesn't refine the core concept of Wii like the Super Nintendo refined the NES, and so I believe what we have here is actually more of a GameCube successor in spite of Wii U's namesake. And that's a very bad thing. If I were to trust my own analysis of sales history and apply it to the present, then I'd say Nintendo should've released a ~75 million-selling Super Wii than a console which seems like it will struggle to succeed at all.

If it was a fad, why did it sell more software than the PS360 and why are games like Just Dance and Skylanders still selling well on the system?

It was a fad(Opinion) and Wii Sports was bundled like crazy on almost every single Wii(Lie). I'm confident that a lot of the wiis out there are just gathering dust( That is great but meaningless with nothing to back it up). You also have to remember that the Wii was considerably cheaper than both the PS3/360. To show you what I mean, I bought a brand new Wii 5 years ago for £40 and a PS3 for £180 (I got lucky).( Is that why people were paying $700.00 for a Wii when they could get a PS for less?

Nintendo need to up their game and support the Wii U in the same way that they supported the 3DS in 2013.

Too easy. I didnt even have to think about it to show how poorly thought out and factless your post was. Opinions are not facts.

Note that I stated 'ALMOST every single Wii' which isn't a lie.

The fad bit was my opinion but I'm sure many agree with me. The definition of fad is 'A fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period of time; a craze.' Has the Wii carried on selling like the PS360? If it wasn't a fad, it would surely still be selling as well as it has. Has the Wii U had the same success as the Wii? No? That's what I thought!

People were paying $700 because it was being hyped like crazy at the beginning (in a similar fashion to the PS4) and some people are just stupid for paying over the odds. The reason it got a 100m is because it was cheaper than the PS360, if it was more expensive after the shortage, I'm 100% confident it would've sold no where near to what it did.  Look at how I said 'You also have to REMEMBER that the Wii was considerably cheaper than PS360'. I was just reminding everyone that the Wii was considerably cheaper than the PS360 throughout its entire lifetime (RRP) and this clearly had an impact. Would you want to buy a £40 Wii and save yourself £120 for other things or spend £180 on the PS3 and not buy anything else?

Also correct me if I'm wrong but when the PS3 released, wasn't there also a crazy price hike on ebay? I do remember there being a shortage http://money.cnn.com/2006/11/17/news/companies/playstation_craziness/

Ah, here it is http://www.foxnews.com/story/2006/11/17/price-playstation-3-tops-2000-on-ebay/

When you clearly know a post is an opinion and respond with it's a factless post, I suggest you don't bother responding.
