Is metroid one of those? |
No. Metroid would be classified as a platformer I think. What I'm describing is a game where you play as a spaceship. The screen keeps scrolling to the left, which gives the illusion that you are moving to the right. Enemies come mostly from the right side of the screen and you shoot them. It's a fairly basic genre. Most of the best games have maddening difficulty that makes games like Ninja Gaiden look elementary in comparison. Most of the best games in this genre abide by the general rules of 1 hit kills and limited amounts of lives and continues, but usually add a gimmick that seperate the best from the worst. Most herald that outside of Einhander, which was developed by Squaresoft, a small developer named Treasure makes the greatest games in this genre. If you haven't played Ikaruga, you're seriously missing out on one of the all time greatest games, at least in my opinion. It's a rare title released on the Gamecube and the Dreamcast.
Oh, know what? You'll probably remember the games R-Type and Gradius. They were the most marketed games in this genre. Think of a 2D version of Star Fox with one hit kills, and you'll begin to see the concept.
it would probably be Action/adventure, RPGs(both Japanese and Western), and Shooters in no particular order

Sorta, but quite different in execution. Not to knock Space Invaders, because I love it. What consoles do you own? Maybe I can recommend one. They're basically a cornerstone of retro gaming. The SNES swore by them.
