I would have gotten you something a little more up to date but I couldnt really find anything too quick. I wasnt going to search too long.

Yea I am aware of this, which is why I am skeptical about the TLOU costing only $20m.

The development and lead time between Uncharted 1 and 2 was 1 year and 10 months. From Uncharted 2 to TLOU was 3 years and 8 months.

Even accounting for their not being a a full team working  at all the time on the project initially, budget would definitely be higher when the development period is more than doubled.

ot really because if the team split in two then the costs would be halved for the game. Being as it tuk wice the time to to mak as the other games i would assume the costs would be around the same?

I dont understand what would make uncharted 2 20 million whilst the last of us would cost sigificatly more. If anything it would be cheaper because of reusing assets from the uncharted games. Naughty dog would not have split ionto two teams if it would increase dev costs.

I know i am just speculating but my scenario seems more likely than others i could imagine. If i am missing somthing i would like your imput. Excuse the grammar, i have been drinking and am using my phone to message

According to Quantic Dream and SCE, Heavy Rain cost €40 mill ($55 mill) to develop, market and distribute and made Sony "more than €100 mill ($137 mill)".

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-04-19-heavy-rain-cost-16-7-million-to-make-and-made-sony-more-than-100-million

If Heavy Rain made over $137 mill with sales of 2.71 mill, using this as an indication The Last of Us made $209 mill with sales of 4.13 mill. Add to that the fact that Heavy Rain didn't have a digital release whereas The Last of Us had record breaking digital sales with over 1 mill sold confirmed.

I can't say for sure but I think whether The Last of Us cost $20 or $50 mill it has been profitable.

Total Units

North America: 1.71m 41.5%
+ Europe: 1.58m 38.2%
+ Japan: 0.23m 5.5%
+ Rest of the World: 0.61m 14.8%
= Global 4.13m

Congrats Naughty Dog! Although Square Enix said that Tomb Raider was not profitable with the same mark.IMO TLOU have a big chance reaching 6 millions at end of the life cycle.

Remember tomb raider was created for multipul platforms. It also had a very extensive marketing campaign. Naughty dog know what they are doing. All ND games cost less than 20 million to make.

They even hired Hollywood voice actors for tomb raider... wtf?

TLOU uses many cliches commonly found in past survival horror games. It easily falls in that genre.

Yes my point is so does COD, it's just in a genre that is more popular with more pick-up and play appeal.

CoD has regenerating health, plenty of ammo, run n' gun game play, and requires minimal exploring... so I think your definition of survival horror is different than mine.

x} mibuokami didn't say that COD is survival horror, just that COD (like your definition of TLOU) uses many cliches commonly found in a specific genre and therefore easily falls in said genre.

Sorry you're not getting what I'm saying. I mean COD uses generic FPS cliches as much as TLOU uses generic surival cliches. It doesn't stop them from being good gameplay. Survuval as a genre though has less inherint appeal which is why the genre sells less.

Oh, I see.

Well the problem isn't the cliches in either game. They're different genres and CoD falls in the genre with wider appeal.

There is a wider appeal for competitive shooters over a survival horror game.

The story telling and presentation of Last of Us is quality. The gameplay was meh.

COD's gameplay is every bit as generic as TLOU. But both are polished and executed extremely well, the difference is -as you said- the appeal of competitive shooters vs survival (i'm not incline to feel TLOU as being a horror tbh).

Yet somehow with those "clichés" it managed to be the most rewarded video game in entertainment industry history. Wonder why Dead Space 3 and RE6 failed so miserably both critically amd commercially

You're supporting an argument I made earlier... "I don't think a game like Last of Us has a wide appeal, per se. It could be argued its lucky to sell as well as it has." Hence, its doing great for a survival horror game.

Anyhow, I wasn't mocking the game. You simply weren't following the discussion.

Exactly! *fist bump*

Amazing sales for a new IP Congratz ND and Congratz Sony.

For those saying they expected better or more...what they hell did you base that on??? Ridiculous.

This game is going to probably reach 5 million+ LTD that's in the same area as Uncharted games...for a new IP that's an amazing accomplishment.
