COD's gameplay is every bit as generic as TLOU. But both are polished and executed extremely well, the difference is -as you said- the appeal of competitive shooters vs survival (i'm not incline to feel TLOU as being a horror tbh).

TLOU uses many cliches commonly found in past survival horror games. It easily falls in that genre.

Yet somehow with those "clichés" it managed to be the most rewarded video game in entertainment industry history. Wonder why Dead Space 3 and RE6 failed so miserably both critically amd commercially
