Unless adding irrefutable data, you're required to post the word opinion somewhere in your post, otherwise someone who doesn't agree will quote you and comment "in your opinion."

Someone may still quote and comment "in your opinion" even when your post has it stated.

Even if 99% of the world will agree, a relative truth, even though a highly regarded opinion, will incite an argument if claimed as fact with some members.

People will keep the argument going until the other person gets tired of replying to their bs and quits responding.  The one who responds last is the winner apparently.

"Unless adding irrefutable data, you're required to post the word opinion somewhere in your post, otherwise someone who doesn't agree will quote you and comment "in your opinion."

This one falls into a grey area. It really depends on the context of what is being written. Generally, it's considered bad journalism to inject news with opinion (however, it is OK to use hard data to back up a column or opinion piece), but this unfortunately happens so often in video games journalism that we've just become accustomed to roll with it. So part of me wants to add this one, and part of me doesn't. I guess the thing hold me back are the folks that try to treat their opinions as facts. I'd like to get some other people to way in on this.

"Someone may still quote and comment "in your opinion" even when your post has it stated."

Will add.

I want to add it, but could you elaborate or provide an example? I want to be sure I understand what you mean.

" People will keep the argument going until the other person gets tired of replying to their bs and quits responding.  The one who responds last is the winner apparently."

Awesome, and will definitely be added.

Holiday sales numbers are always a sign of imminent greatness in the coming year and there is no arguing against charts that show past performance versus present.

It is insulting as an entertainment concept to imagine someone enjoying games on a device that isn't a market leader.

Every year when post-holiday adjustments hit; feign shock, and possibly show disgust at the inaccurate tracking of vgchartz.

Concept art and the knowledge of which studio is behind a game project is more than enough grounds to be super excited and start predicting metascores for the coming masterpiece. On a similar note; early gameplay trailers or even cinematics, are enough grounds to claim Game of the Generation.

These are all excellent contributions that will be added with extreme intensity.

Cool cool cool.

You might wanna add the following, which have nothing to do with you.

26. Never admit you're wrong. It doesn't matter if someone proves you wrong. Deny it at all costs, call it thread derailment, say it's irrelevant, that they're wrong, which would make you right, because lets' face it, you're smarter.

27. Be vague. Not too vague, as no one will care about what you have to say. Say something negative which is clearly about a certain fanbase, but don't mention the actual fanbase. If someone calls you out, claim you were talking about any number of fanbases.

28. Mention that you have all 3 consoles, which makes you unbiased. If someone points out that you're negative about a console, juts remind them that you have that console, so there is no reason for them to accuse you of being overly negative about it. It helps if you slightly criticise a company you like. You can then save those posts and use them to point out just how unbiased you are.

29. Use gifs of someone laughing to ridicule one's argument or pictures to annoy someone, instead of an actual argument. Much better. (Again obviously this is not about you; there's nothing wrong with the picture you added)

30. If somone disagrees with you and you exlain your point, but they still won't change their mind, there's only one possible explanation: problem with their reading comprehension

31. Act surprised when the sales of a console which has been doing terrible are released and they're still bad. "Wow, terrible x sales".

32. Say something negative about the sales of the company you don't like, but end it with a sad smiley face. The smiley face makes everything ok.

Again, to clarify, this is not about you, but VGC logic I've noticed over the years. Great thread btw.

Feels like your second one is still directed toward me from yesterday, but I'll take your word for it. All I can say is that this thread was never meant to bash any one fanbase. I've never hidden the fact that I'm a big Nintendo fan, but I've also never felt the need to disparage Sony and Microsoft unless someone from that camp attacks Nintendo first. Yes, most of my posts and attention goes toward Nintendo, because unlike some other regulars, I don't feel the need to go into threads about games and consoles I don't own. As cheesy as this sounds, I believe that making a better online community starts at a personal level, and I don't want to contribute to a warzone mentality and site decay.

1.  On this one I don't mean journalists.  I mean in forums.  Just about everything you post in a forum is going to be an opinion of yours.  You're not going to be placing facts everywhere, but it's too common that people will quote your post, stating "in your opinion."  Like you're trying to pass your opinion off as fact.

Example.

Person 1.  Persona 4 is amazing, best SMT game.

Person 2:  It's a good game, but SMT Nocturne is better.

Person 1:  "It's a good game, but SMT Nocturne is better."  In your opinion.

Everything posted there is opinion, but because person 2 disagreed with person 1, person 1 comes back with an "in your opinion" response.  No fucking duh it's my opinion.  Just like the first statement is stating one game is better than another, but person 2 didn't say "in your opinion."  It's implied that everything is opinion and that person 2 just doesn't agree and his opinion differs.

2.  How you were doing like 1. then 1a, 1b, etc.  This would be one of those.  I've actually made a forum post where I said "in my opinion, blah blah blah, etc" and I had someone reply to me "in your opinion."  That's how bad it is.  People will skim through, see something that they don't agree with, and without reading the rest, make that statement.  If 1.  is say #50, then 2.  would be #50a.

3.  Relativity is truth in your opinion, relative truth would be an opinion of yours or a majority.  Example would be, the Vita has no games, or the Vita analog sticks are too close to the buttons where you can't help but touch it while playing an action oriented game.  For the whole Vita analog stick thing, I stated it as a fact, since it's a commonly mentioned opinion, back when I made the thread PSP has a better design than Vita.  Basically claiming a fact that isn't 100% fact, like 2+2=4 people will argue.  It was me basically using the terminology a little bit loosely but there was atleast one person offended by my misuse of the word.  If he agreed with me though I guarantee it wouldn't have been an issue.  You don't have to add 3.

You can edit them to make them sound better.  Maybe the way I stated the first one for example sounded akward which is why you were confused on what I meant.

Trust me, it wasn't directed towards you. It was a pattern that I've noticed. I was referring to stealth trolling which some people have even admitted of doing. I don't see how anyone would think that you were trolling, so it's not about you.

Yes and if it is from NeoGaf, it must be treated as fact. However a massive portion is proven wrong.

Absolutely awesome post, when I got to the bold I almost choked laughing out loud :D

to the non bolded one I think you should add "Gamestore is no longer stocking my console of choice? I think you'll find that it's out of stock, from selling so well!"

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

I have to admit I like it.

Its missing some things but I am to tired to name them all

Stuff like: your company won the console war no matter if it sold less.

Will add other stuff next time I visit this fabulous thread

Several of these might tie into your current rules, but here are a few of my observations from lurking here for a while.

-If you are debating against an opposing fandom, and someone finds a hole in your logic, it is perfectly acceptable blame the fandom that person is defending. It doesn't matter how wrong you are, it's all the fault of overzealous fans defending their company of choice. Use the phrase "white knight" a lot when telling those fans off, that really helps get your point across.

-Generalizations of opposing fanbases are fair game, as long as it's not your fandom. Everyone in that fandom is of one mind, but if they dare to make the same claim about your fandom, feel free to report them at once. (this probably ties into one of the already stated rules, but I've typed too much to stop now!)

-If a new game features completely original gameplay, but known characters, it's a rehash.

-A game only counts as a new IP if it is available physically, is critically well-received, and sells at least a million units.

32 is something that really irks me here, so I feel like I need to applaud Viper for pointing it out. It's one thing if you're a fan of A, and want A to improve. But if you're a fan of B, and just don't like company A or fanbase A...GET OUT OF THOSE THREADS.

Great thread and responses by the way. It makes me happy to know I'm not the only one who notices these issues with certain posters.

Even though console generation winners are the ones who sell the most, I'll rewrite the rules so mine would win :P

So this is what you guys do when I'm hard at work? Make the best thread ever?!?

If your console's big title is also available on PC, nobody needs your console because EVERYBODY has a high powered gaming PC.

If my console runs a game with better resolution/fps than your console, it's worth bragging about because NOBODY has a high powered gaming PC.
