Yeah, how about the rest of my post that you cut off on the quote? lulz If Sony thought it would be popular, they'd have had more available. It's just an opinion. |
"popular" is relative. I'm sure Sony thought it would sell pretty well, and it did, as evident by the recent Twitch statistics. So it wasn't like Sony only made 100 of these. The camera was readily available at launch at various retailers. My guess is the sudden spike in demand post-launch was due to the fact that many PS4 owners saw how cool and easy it was to do Twitch streaming and decided to jump on the bandwagon to try for themselves, when originally they had no intent to buy the camera. Two of my friends who have never dabbled in game streaming before went out to buy the camera after seeing me do it.
Also, Sony is probably focusing more on manufacturing PS4s right now rather than the camera. The PS4 is still sold out in many retailers and I don't think it was because Sony didn't think it would be popular. Sometimes the demand just surpasses expectations.
I don't think anyone would have thought streaming from consoles would have been so popular. It's driving the sales, imo.

Yea, the key factor is the ease of use. Console streaming in the past was a hassle and required 3rd party hardware/software, but now on PS4 it is literally the click of a button. I was actually very surprised that the XONE didn't have Twitch streaming available on day 1. I guess they chose to focus more on Youtube since it's more in line with the XONE being an all-in-one entertainment hub, but at least for game streaming specifically, Twitch is the better platform IMO.

That's a good point, but I doubt Sony thought that far ahead. I don't think they expected the camera to catch on with streamers, hopefully now they recognize the potential and put some more weight behind it. Sony has a big advantage here as the XBO doesn't have Twitch yet and Nintendo won't even pay attention to the market I have PS Move but I didn't get the camera. The whole streaming thing doesn't interest me and there doesn't appear to be any games that use it in any meaningful way. I wish Killzone Shadow Fall had Move support considering how well it worked with Killzone 3. |
You really dont think Sony thought the camera would catch on with Streamers? Sony actually has twitch and Ustream available from Day1 on the PS4...Not only that but live broadcasting is one of the main things they pushed at their conferences.
So yeah gotta disagree with you here, I think they knew very well how popular it would be. Dont forget Sony also has a few MMO games on PC...which get decent time on Twitch im sure they are aware of the rise of streaming in the PC market.
I really don't understand the comments here...
Streaming is BIG on PC. Why wouldn't it be big on consoles? Both Sony and MS made a big deal about streaming at their conferences...obviously they thought about it and the impact it would have on sales.
There's not much evidence to suggest otherwise. It's not like they didn't mention streaming at all during the build up to launch...

I think it's because Console gamers in general don't care what's happening in the PC world. Plus game streaming on consoles in the past have not been very easy and accessible. Lastly, with any new feature or technology, most people nowadays have a tendency to be skeptics first, even when they haven't tried it firsthand.
It's dat Twitch. That and that it is actually useful for other stuff too like the voice commands and getting called for a technical when I spout expletives at NBA2k etc. I am glad I got the camera and so are my kids who do think playroom is quite fun.

It's funny, since Sony both:
1) Did, hence streaming abilities out of box
2) Didn't, hence lack of cameras

Hmmm weird. I cant imagine how PC gaming would be without twitch :/
Its good though. Seems like Sony and MS are giving console gamers something they need but dont even know it
