Forums - Movies & TV - IMAX is DOOM.

Stock in the giant-screen movie company has dropped 14 percent so far this week.

Gravity hasn't kept Imax shares from falling.

The Warner Bros. film is generating tremendous buzz and early 3D screenings on giant Imax screens have yielded particularly impressive commentary. Fandango reports that 3D advance ticket sales for Gravity have been "stellar."

Still, Imax stock has sunk 14 percent so far this week as some analysts weigh in with negativity about the company, despite enthusiasm for Gravity, a special-effects laden space odyssey that stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney opening Friday.

On Wednesday, Benchmark analyst Mark Hickey initiated coverage of Imax with a “hold rating” and $29.42 price target, which suggested no gain for the stock in the next year or so.

Shares dropped 4 percent Wednesday and another 9 percent Thursday. The stock closed at $25.96 Thursday after starting the week at $30.09.

Hickey’s analysis indicates a lack of optimism for Imax’s 2014 slate, even though it includes a slew of films based on known quantities, like GodzillaI, Frankensteinand RoboCop. The analyst also is concerned that the growth of the footprint is slowing for Imax, which operates 767 theaters in 54 countries.

Also on Wednesday, Michael Pachter of Wedbush lowered his price target on Imax to $28 a share because of what he sees as weaker-than-expected results in the just-ended third quarter, which included such films as ElysiumRiddick and Pacific Rim.

The analyst, however, left his fourth-quarter estimates intact because of Gravity, “which should benefit from outstanding reviews,” he said.

Pachter, in fact, says his fourth-quarter estimates might be conservative. He sees Gravity performing well, then a lull, then strong results toward the end of the quarter with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Like Hickey, Pachter also warns of slow expansion, writing: “Despite an increasing backlog and a consistent stream of high-profile theater-signing announcements, management appears content with a slow installation pace that limits long-term growth.”

The only company we care about if it is doomed is Nintendo. Next one please

ehm, I think this is an article from october?

Damnn, I like going to IMAX but I also like watching movies for free at home so I guess it does make sense

This is definitely old. Stock prices rebounded shortly after this, then went down a bit. Still they're not in a bad spot at all.

IMAX has tarnished their reputation for me. I loved going to 70mm (8K) presentations, awesome picture quality.
Then they went to display full length upscaled 35mm (4K) movies. It didn't look any better then sitting a bit closer in a regular cinema. Actually worse since the IMAX screen still was 1.36:1, almost half it is was black with a 2.35:1 movie.
Even worse after that they switched to dual 2K digital projectors. And asking upwards of $20 per ticket for it.

Now they're finally switching to dual 4K, but not advertising where. Their website just goes on about their digital remastering process. Messing with saturation, contrast, brightness and aspect ratio. This picture has been formatted to fit this screen. As a videophile that all screams no to me.

IMAX could get me back into theaters now movies are filmed and mastered in 4K, but they're just too slow with 4K adoption, and not advertising it at all. I'm not going to drive half an hour to check if they've made the switch or not. IMAX should have been a forerunner in presenting 4K movies.

Seriously, you have to post a reason when locking threads. Until anyone can report such a reason (doesn't even have to be a good reason, just a reason), this thread shall remain open.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

So IMAX is 8K HD.

Well we can now confirm that 8K HD TVs will happen, but hopefully not for up to 5 years from now.

One of the problems with IMAX is that theaters now have their own IMAX with 4K projectors and of course also advance seating & advance audio. Plus the much more flatter screen for a IMAX size screen is such versions as Rave XTREME. But AMC is probably the most major theater chain in America and they seem to have no self version of IMAX making them use actual IMAX only, which should help.

For TVs, 2K 3D is all I need. I was considering to later upgrade to 4K since all Hollywood movies since something like 2010 have been filmed in at least digital 4K 2D & 3D cameras. Anyways, since 8K HD is IMAX, I will just skip 4K TVs.

Thanks for mentioning that IMAX is 8K HD.

Did you know that they now have Digital 2D & 3D IMAX Cameras and that they weigh less then physical 2D IMAX cameras, and that they don't make much noise, and that they are smaller?

So far it seems only the Digital 3D IMAX Cameras are being used, and Transformers 4 is one of the movies. Christopher Nolan seems to hate Digital, but I don't know why.

Waiting for 8K content will take a while. Japan has plans to implement 8K broadcasting from 2016 to 2020.
http://sploid.gizmodo.com/8k-tv-films-arrive-to-japan-and-they-feel-like-looking-1464050347
But considering how our infrastructure can't even handle good quality 1080p it might be a long wait.

There is plenty of 4K content already, as you said movies from 2010 and onwards are 4K digital, anything before 2000 is 4K 35mm.

IMAX only has documentaries on 70mm plus these are all the 70mm movies ever made:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_70_mm_films
I guess if you like soviet movies, you'll have a great selection of 8K content.

On the other hand, 8K prototypes have already been shown at CES. It might not be that long until they appear next to 4K tvs. 4K might be the new Ultra HD ready standard. I just wonder how you're going to get native content on an 8K tv.

Anyway for IMAX, invest in NHK's 8K 120fps cameras, and set up dual 8K projectors on huge screens with 22.2 surround sound, that will justify the higher ticket price again.

22.2 3D sound, sounds great (no pond intended, LOL). But Disney Theaters like El Capitan have Dolby Atmos 64 Speaker Sound for 3D sound.

I was planning on waiting 5 years or so, for 8K HD TVs anyways.

I don't have an HD TV yet, but aiming for a Smart 3D HD (1080p) TV that can convert 2D into 3D, and can do at least 60 fps per video image, and allow such adjustments as 24 fps specifically. (I don't want my live action 2D to look cheesy, LOL)

After that, I plan on getting a Deluxe Wii U, hopefully a Wind Waker edition, because of the stylist GamePad controller. And diffintely planning on getting The Wonderful 101 as my first Wii U game with system, to play first. I also going to catch up on what the Wii had with a WiiMote Plus + Nunchuck. (I skipped the Wii & PS3)

Anyways, can someone tell me the difference between X.0 sound and X.1 sound and X.2speaker sound?
I understand that X.1 Speaker Sound needs USB 1.0 or 2.0, and what about the requirements for listening to X.2 Speaker Sound at Home?
