IMAX has tarnished their reputation for me. I loved going to 70mm (8K) presentations, awesome picture quality.
Then they went to display full length upscaled 35mm (4K) movies. It didn't look any better then sitting a bit closer in a regular cinema. Actually worse since the IMAX screen still was 1.36:1, almost half it is was black with a 2.35:1 movie.
Even worse after that they switched to dual 2K digital projectors. And asking upwards of $20 per ticket for it.
Now they're finally switching to dual 4K, but not advertising where. Their website just goes on about their digital remastering process. Messing with saturation, contrast, brightness and aspect ratio. This picture has been formatted to fit this screen. As a videophile that all screams no to me.
IMAX could get me back into theaters now movies are filmed and mastered in 4K, but they're just too slow with 4K adoption, and not advertising it at all. I'm not going to drive half an hour to check if they've made the switch or not. IMAX should have been a forerunner in presenting 4K movies.
