Forums - Nintendo - Prediction: Nintendo will drop Wii U support in 2016

wait for MK8 and Smash before seriously prophesying doom. if stuff is still this bad after that then they are in serious trouble.

Dropping support for the console in 2016 will make it impossible for the Wii U to reach GC levels, not that it matters though as it's still a horrible number.

I think we could see their next system at the end of 2017 though.

"I've Underestimated the Horse Power from Mario Kart 8, I'll Never Doubt the WiiU's Engine Again"

I would be perfectly fine with a new console fall 2016. Four year is exactly what the original Xbox had, and Wii U is set to sell way less. At this point I'm unhappy with my Wii U, can't wait for a new one that is either Wiimote as standard (very unlikely), or a more standard controller, or something entirely new. That last one's a big risk but it could either pay off well (Wii) or not so well (Wii U).

But they said today that they spent way more money on development. Maybe the Wii U still has many great things to offer in the next years, but at this point I expect none. :( At least there's one game I really like so far this gen, Rayman Legends, but I'm finished with that one now. Wouldn't expect that my favourite title on a Nintendo system would be third party.

Edit: And I don't expect the Wii U ever to reach GCN numbers, in my opinion the console doesn't deserve it either. GameCube was a great console, while the Wii U will maybe eventually be fun, all there is now is some early 3rd party titles which is small, NSMB, a couple niche 1st party titles, Nintendo Land, Lego City, Pikmin, WWHD and of course 3D World. That last one hasn't even moved many systems...

But when Nintendo is in the darkest of times, they usually bring up awesome stuff. Don't disappoint me now Nintendo. I really get my hopes up for E3, I just can't be prepared to be disappointed one more time.

Yep.

Wii u will end up giving benefits as they did Nintendo Gamecube and N64 because of software and same with 3DS

2016 would not be too bad to finish support. Wii U came out before the Xone and Ps4.   It would be understandable since wii u's hardware is already inferior to MS and Sony' consoles.  Nintendo needs a real next gen console [not another gamecube failure console...then again I LOVED the gamecube :-p]

Praise the One.

Reasonable prediction. I can't see Nintendo stock owners being very happy about huge losses on a product.

The only way Nintendo will release a new console IMO in 2016 is if they think the XBOX ONE and PS4 will last till say 2020/2021. Otherwise their next console will kind of be stuck between generations and their next system will also have to have a short life space so they can catch up tech wise with the competition.

lol, I think it will be realistically done a long before that.

Lets be honest, even though you might want to say the Wii was supported until 2012, Nintendo really stopped supporting it in earnest after 2010. I'm sorry but one Zelda game (which only took that long because the Zelda team takes forever to make a game) isn't "support". It's throwing a dog a bone.

Ditto for the GameCube, they didn't do sh*t for it after 2004.

It's like saying you were married to your wife for 6 years, even though you only lived together for 4 years and barely spoke or saw each the last two years. That's really a six year marriage on technical level alone.

I see nothing wrong with this prediction. The only problem is Nintendo is very likely release another console weaker than the xbone. More so if Iwata is still in charge and he will call it progress.

I feel like rushing another new console out as soon as possible would be one of the worst things Nintendo could do.
