i remember iwata or myamoto saying the always start thinking and working about their next consoles as soon as the launch a new one. and considering nintendo usually goes by a 5 year life span, this isnt something that shouldnt be expected.

DanneSandin said: Of course they're working on new consoleS. That means that they're probably working on both the new handheld AND the next home console, but the handheld will of course be released first. I'd say that the next Nintendo portable will be announced in 2016 and released in 2017, when the next home console will be announced for a 2018 release.
why dont you ask your source?
Hamister said: I would be surprised if Nintendo wasn't planning their next hardware already. This is not a surprise. I believe it's required to begin development of the next hardware system as soon as you have released the present hardware system. Considering Nintendo have recently merged their handheld division with their home console division, I believe their next system will be a combined handheld and home console system, based entirely on streaming content. I'd expect a release during holiday season 2016.
So Vita TV with PS Now. Following statement is only for your speculation is right: Nintendo innovates while Sony copies!
From what I understand about Nintendo, they never stop designing new hardware. The same way they keep prototyping tons of software ideas and only release the ideas that they think will be cheap to develop into a full game and be appealing to broad base of potential gamers.
That's pretty much obvious, probaby Sony and MS would do postmortem analysis this year and will starting developing some hardware in 2015-2016. Hardware development takes time, so you better start early.

He's switched jobs, so he can't tell me that stuff anymore. But I'll ask him next time I talk with him ;)
I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!
Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
Despite what this report says is bogus, the affirmation is kinda obvious, they probably started discussing ideas before the Wii U was even released, that's not new, it seems a lot of people don't ''get'' this console development thing haha
Of course they are, the hardware guys don't sit idle after systems come out.
The more interesting thing is what is it, and when will it come out? I think sooner rather than later. The mobile market is putting real pressure on Nintendo to make something innovative and cool for the kids. I think this new handheld will break from the mold of the DS/3DS and push into tablet territory with a much higher resolution screen and numerous "apps" that kids will love.

Any talk or traction of a new system in development will only cause further declines in current gen hardware for Nintendo, especially as the new filters through to non forums etc.
Licence said: I'm sure Nintendo is already developing both their next handheld and console. The process of bringing a new piece of hardware to the market takes years of planning, research, prototyping and design. This seems rather obvious to me. I would be surprised if MS and Sony are not already doing so either.
This ^^^
All 3 platform holders start working on their next console when their current console has been released, even before sometimes.
