Forums - Sony - Sony Japan President: PS4's Success in the West is Motivating Japanese Developers Too

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia President Hiroshi Kawano is obviously quite happy about the explosive success of the PS4 in the west, but the reasons behind his satisfaction go beyond simple sales, as he explained in an interview on Famitsu.com.

After mentioning his own excitement for the considerable sales in the West, Kawano-san mentioned that it’s encouraging game developers in Japan as well.

In fact I’ve heard many Japanese developers saying “this is very encouraging.” Considering that it’s possible for the PS4 to have this kind of momentum despite the fact that many were uneasy about what would become of home consoles in the future, many developers say “My motivation has suddenly been rekindled.” This makes me really happy.

And to be perfectly honest, it makes me happy as well. It’s hard not to feel relieved in seeing that both next generation consoles (not only the PS4) are doing very well, and it’s easy to understand why game developers would feel encouraged and motivated in their creativity.

It’s also good to hear that Japanese studios are ready to raise to the challenge brought to the table by the new consoles. Adoption of the PS3 was a little sluggish at the beginning of the last generation. Hopefully this time around things will be different.

3rd parties will always be with Sony and Nintendo handhelds. We all know that. But is good for PS4

Hopefully it'll be good gen for Japanese devs. The past gen western devs were a lot better in my opinion.

This console will sell like hotcakes in Japan.... if Sony supplied then I predict ~550k units in the launch week.

That will be hard to for me to believe, but the PS4 really has outdone itself so far.

Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,

Yeah i expect the same, 500K-600k, well over 700k worldwide that week.

Guess this interview was code for they secured Dragon Quest XI.

Hopefully the PS4 reinvigorates the home console in Japan, really been lacking since the PS2. Japanese 3rd parties need to be thinking in terms of expansion and hopefully the PS4 will give them that option on the home console front. Cant wait for the upcoming Tokyo Game Show.

Supply is the biggest Sony's enemy .

Yeah i wonder if the higher than expected demand in the rest of the world will allow them to reserve enough stock, though i think they will manage. I belive they increased production a while ago. A really succesfull console in Japan would be great, it will mean a very diverse library of games.

I believe whatever number Sony supplies, they would be sold out.

As it stands all pre-orders are sold out. I think there were three batches since October. All gone in minutes.
