My wife is from St Louis MO and I'm from England. We both had to spend our own money to meet each other. She came over to see me first, but I still also paid to go out and see her.
Ignore people saying don't do long distance/don't pay money. If you think it's worth it, take a chance. However also be sensible. I'd know my wife 5+ years before I actually met her in person. We were very close and very good friends already.

It's never cool to blow your friends off for a girl (or boy). It seems kinda desperate and unkind to your friends. :(
Espically as you really do not know this person. Most LDR do not work, but hey, my friend met his husband that way and they have been married for 6 years now. Pretty happy too.
But hey, I do hope it works out well for you. But if it doesn't, remember my words. Sometimes, you get what you deserve.
