For the Xbox part, obviously developers will need to do the actual "magic" but what is great from the cloud Microsoft is proposing is that they bring virtually unlimited calculation power (with an ever growing numbers of server) to developers for FREE because the fee is actually offloaded to the Xbox live subscribers an open up plenty of new possibility that were physically possible but financially impossible to date.

The Cloud, as MS uses it, is just a buzzword MS. Most of their fans see through it, gladly, but some fanaticly belive it.

I would bet some marketing person took a Cisco networking class, saw the depiction of the Internet as a "cloud" and started the buzz. I have a 20 year old lab guide that has it depicted as such.

He'll I have an old IBM token ring book from the 80s that uses a cloud for the lan. It's a symbol to mean networking in the place of a full topology diagram.

Pretty much how it started.   The WAN outside of the LAN you cotnrol (the Internet) was depicted by a cloud icon in charts, network diagrams, schematics and graphics since the early 90's and possibly even in the 80's.  Amazon, I believe, was the first to use the term commercially as part of a service package.

The basics of Cloud computing itself though has been around since the 50's with mainframes and terminals.

Cloud gaming in a small summary

Sony: Streaming games
Microsoft: cloud will act like a seperate CPU/GPU to boost your consoles performance.
