(1) Yep. WiiU has been having secret 3rd party games since January 2013. i'm still waiting for them. (2) Those publishers don't sell jackshit on Nintendo platform (or at last not that more than on Vita, where digital sales are higher) (3) That has nothing to do with the case at hand. Those titles are paid in full by Nintendo, the contractor has 0 risk. |
1. This isn't specifically about the Wii U, and your attempt to troll is not appreciated. That being said, the Wii U had quite a few third-party titles in 2013. And yet, with the exception of a couple of minor new IP titles and a couple of games delayed from 2013, third-party Wii U games in 2014 have not been announced at all. Even the ones we KNOW are coming. That is a fact. And it's exactly the same regarding the 3DS.
2. Ubisoft, maybe - although I find it doubtful that they have zero titles for the 3DS. Sega released three titles for 3DS in 2013, not including Mario & Sonic at the Olympics. Namco Bandai released 21 3DS games in 2013. Tecmo Koei released two titles for 3DS in 2013. But good for you for trying to demolish a solid argument for why 3DS's upcoming lineup might be stronger than the current schedule suggests while putting forward the idea that Vita digital sales are higher with ZERO justification.
3. You've missed the point - it's not that there's no risk, it's that Nintendo isn't going to give them a low-risk high-return opportunity like working with Smash Bros, Zelda, etc, without those publishers giving something in return. I have zero doubt that the agreement reached that led to these co-development situations involved further agreements by those publishers to also make other games for the Wii U and/or 3DS. Kind of like how Sega got to use Mario in exchange for making Sonic Lost World (and possibly the third Sonic title, which may or may not have Mario in it) a Nintendo exclusive.
There is no inherent benefit to Nintendo to contract their biggest franchises out to third parties if those third parties give nothing else in return. Nintendo would have been better off using the money to make another studio for themselves, and develop it all in-house.
Do you really think Nintendo doesn't have studios capable of making Smash Bros, given that they've made previous Smash Bros games? They gave it to Namco Bandai for a reason. NB will have games coming to the Wii U.
