I would argue the exact opposite, that a game is good precisely because one likes it, and is bad because one doesn't like it. What I don't understand is when someone says "it's a bad game, but I like it," or, conversely, "it's a great game but I don't like it." If you like it, it's good, at least to you. But you can't speak for anyone else anyway, so YOU are all that matters.

That's a very simplistic way of seeing things isn't it? Reality exists in spite of our opinions, and shoudn't payed reviewers be put on a higher standard than just some random guy on a gaming website?

Thanks everyone for your reply's. I'm glad to know we can have this type of conversation in a rational way without attacking each other.

So keep it coming please.

I've argued this before. I mean, I don't like sports games at all but I know a good one when I see one. I'm not the biggest FPS fan but I can appreciate what goes into one (and I actually do enjoy Call of Duty and Halo quite a bit). I don't like sim racers at all but I can see why people like Forza and Gran Turismo.

And then, there's the guys that, when asked the question "What's the worst game of all time", instantly reply:
Halo
Gears of War
Uncharted
Mario

What. The. Fuck.

Just because it doesn't appeal to you doesn't mean it sucks! There's a lot of movies that can't hold my interest but I can acknowledge that they're good for their respective audience, right? Same goes for games! If the game isn't broken, the gameplay is solid, the graphics are great, the story is good, why hate? Blows my mind every single time.

Some people just see that a game has mario in the title and guess it is going to be yet another game in the exact same series with the exact same gameplay. Doesn't matter to this type of gamer if it's Mario Tennis, Mario Golf or Mario Kart it's just another Mario game. Nintendo addressed this in the last Nintendo Direct even, they said they had some great ideas for new games but they were worried about if they should create new characters for them or just use the known and loved Nintendo characters, they said in the end they said that adding different faces wouldn't change the final game and would just make it easier for their fans to associate with the game if it featured them.

Again some people just look at the new games which feature that lovely italian mustache and just think.... Rehash, sad times.

This has been an issue for them since the days of the NES. For example, how many people would have overlooked Dr. Mario if Mario wasn't even associated with it?

It's difficult for some to comprehend that a game with Mario in it doesn't necessarily mean it contains the same gameplay elements. i consider a Mario game to be more like a "quality" branding than a game that actually stars Mario...

I would say its because many people think of quality in terms of a desirable thing. When the thing is not desirable its not quality to them anymore.

If I see a handcrafted quality made carpet and I hate it. Its still a piece of junk for me. A well made piece of junk admittedly. I can appreciate the thousands of hours people put in making the carpet but many people equate the term Quality to "good product" a product you don`t enjoy is not good anymore.

I guess you can just look at the newer Nintendo games which feature Mario to be the equivilent of the NES "Nintendo Seal of Quality" back in the 80s :) It's rare to find a game made by Nintendo which they've deemed worthy enough to have their main characters face attached to which is a bomb.

If you like the game, then you think it's a good game. How can one like a game and think it's bad. That's like me liking a talk show that I can't stand.

As a human being you're supposed to be able to have rational thoughts. To like a game and at the same time, being honest with yourself enough to see if that game is in fact anything special or just recycled material from years ago (COD: Ghost for ex).

Oops, didn't see this reply until just now.

What higher standard should game critics aspire to? Yes, they should have journalistic integrity, they should demonstrate consistency, and they should be well-informed and articulate. But beyond that, what can they do? Their ratings and reviews will always, always be tied to their own subjective opinion of what defines greatness. In that respect they are no different from the random guys on gaming websites. What makes them special is their proximity to the industry, their deep knowledge of video games, and their writing style -- at least in theory.

Apart from giving us the release date, the genre, and the specifics of each game, they are not responsible for reflecting reality. They're responsible for reflecting their own values and priorities in an artful, entertaining way.

Excellent question. I hate FPS but I can recognise when a FPS is a quality product.

you can consider everything recyled material, how does that make it bad,if your really into the game?
