Tribune buys Gracenote for $170M

Tribune (TRBAA) says it will acquire media recognition firm Gracenote ffrom Sony (SNE +1.5%) for $170M.

The company plans to use Gracenote to help improve its entertainment metadata services.

Sony bought Gracenote five years ago for $260M.


Wasn't a great investment if you look at the value

If you over look the fact that i brought in 100-200 million. I'd assume that's yearly. But maybe the whole time they've owned it. Either way, they made money on the deal.

whoaaa. Thats a fire sale.

surely it was making money and they paid more than that to buy it?

This will add a one off $60m to this years operating income... but they cant have done it just for that reason!?

Well it would have probably made them some money on the way.
I think the value went down due to aged technology or something.

I don't exactly know what they do, besides tracking music down.

Revenue

if it was making 100m to 200m in profit and they sold it for 170m then they are insane.

Guess it was making a tiny profit or is loss making.

 

Yeah, But is that yearly? Or the time of owner ship? And how much of the revenue turned into profit? There are too many missing variables here.  I doubt they took a hit on it.  Maybe they didn't see the return they wanted from it so they cut it loose. There’s always something that we don’t see. Like when everyone tried to jump their shit for selling buildings and then they go out a buy a new one.  Also, the price difference that they paid and sold for could have been part of the deal to keep the tech is Sony products.

Yep, people dont realize Sony pictures was actually No.1 in ticket sales in 2012 with 4.4b beating out Warner(4.25b) 20th Century Fox(3.7b) and Disney(3.6b)

2013 sucked though. But 2014 is looking great so far, Robocop 2, pompeii, spidey etc
