Copy what Bioshock did

nu-uh, copy what resistance did!

Better copy what Spec Ops: The Line did.

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

2) Don't force scripted encounters where the player HAS to do X, Y, and then Z for arbitrary reasons. So I'm playing Far Cry 3 and the island queen or whatever the hell she is has me take a drug. Next thing I know, I'm having to fight a giant monster with a bow and arrow. I actually hate the bow and arrow and never use it. I want my bloody guns back. It's like some kind of boss battle in a different genre, I'm having to run around this small area, dodging magic ink balls, while attempting to shoot it in the head with arrows. Absolutely stupid sequence.

Is that a reference at skyward sword. I hated the battle against Tantalus, ran out of arrows using them on the tentacle attacks, I didn't know I had to preserve them for the next phase. Ok now what.

I absolutely agree with give the player the freedom to solve it their way. I'm currently playing AC4 and the story missions are terrible. Follow this guy, stay in this tiny circle to listen to a conversation you can't hear anyway, no don't kill him yet, ok now you can kill him, nope sory you got detected 1 microsecond before he died, start from scratch. It's so dumb that I can kill him covertly and fail, too soon, wrong spot, who knows. Yet jump on top of him from a roof surrounded by guards, congrats success cutscene triggered.

STALKER is a good example on how to do fps right.

Me.

One of my most favorite FPS campaigns ever and this was probably the best mission of them all.

FPS games where the player has control on what he's going to do and not just led along a predetermined path where the only interaction is the next cutscene.

Chronicles of Riddick and Half Life are examples of good story based FPS' I've played. I think classic FPS' are more enjoyable than the Call of Duty style of follow random character and do what he tells you to do until the next cutscene. Games like Disruptor, Star Wars Dark Forces, Goldeneye, Doom, Duke Nukem, etc.

Have fun dynamic gameplay like Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon, a story that doesn't revolve around "foreigners coming to invade innocent 'Murica", and the complete opposite of just about everything Killzone: Shadow Fall did.

Also, if the campaign is supposed to be a squad-based shooter, make the squad aspect meaningful and not just an excuse for my character to get yelled at by some loud ass commanding officer.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

I honestly never got why people so adore that mission. So much of it was just boring padding to me.

Variety.
Good story in an interesting setting.
Freedom to explore the surroundings and game mechanics.
Pacing, good balance between quiet sections and action.
Memorable characters along the way.

Everything that HL2 did basically.

Agree with all the above.

Years on, I have still yet to find a FPS to top the Half Life games (for single player). Just wished they'd hurry up and release episode 3 or HL3 already :/

Well if I went back to it now, I have a feeling it wouldn't have the same effect on me as when I first played it. For its time, I thought it was amazing. People love it because they have fond memories of it like I do. :P
