Forums - Sales Discussion - Amazon Massive PS4 Shipment Hypothesis

Is OP's theory plausible?

Yes 25 75.76%

No 8 24.24%

Total:33

Now this is just a theory, but it is safe to say that Sony allotted at least 30k PS4s based on the fact that they were available for 13h and the last 900 sold in less than 30 min. When you consider that the sales per hour were most likely higher earlier in the shipment and factor in the bundles this allotment to Amazon could easily been over 60k, maybe upwards on 80k.

But why so many from one retailer? Well working in logistics myself I think Sony did this in order to get as much product to consumers prior to the 24th. Essentially these console skipped the normal supply chain, if they had taken the normal supply chain they would have missed Cmas. Instead of sending them to warehouses where retailers could then distribute they told Amazon hold many they were allotted and amazon sold them and shipped direct to customers.

This does several things. 1. It's gets the console in the hands of the consumer for Cmas. 2.it transfers the cost of shipping to the consumer increasing the profit margins for Sony (Normally Sony pays the expense of getting commodities to wholesale) 3. It makes them number one on amazon which I could see them bragging about here shortly.

Yes it is. Evolution is a theory that explains our origins. This is a theory that explains massive shipments. Neither are proven and their plausibility is left up for interpretation.

It went online around midnight.. there is your theory going to the pits. Do you really think there were hundreds of people logged in to Amazon at that time? Better theory: More likely sales after midnight were rather low for a few hours, so make that a 25k delivery to Amazon (which would still be a massive 10% of total weekly stock for one reseller).

i live in Hawaii went on sale at 7pm my time. 9pm on west coast.

The theory of evolution does not explain our origins. It's just a theory.

A theory is a theory.

I'm just glad they sent a big shipment to Amazon in the first place. That thing was so dry and left without a PS4 for so long. Sadly it's sold out again.

A theory does explain things, that is the nature of theories.  However, a theory is also not proven to be true... So the title of the thread is a bit misleading...

No is not an explanation unless you put the word " possible "  before explanation cause this woul make the sentence not 100 %  fact , so only this way it can possible coexist with the word theory , since this word is not 100 % fact too.

You can't compare your theory to the theory of evolution. I think some people in this thread don't know what a scientific theory is. For all intents and purposes evolution is a fact. It has been methodically proven over decades.

I think some people are confused over the fact that there are scientific theories and laws. Theories do not eventually become laws. A scientific law tells us what happens. A scientific theory tells us how and why something happens. There are laws of evolution that tell us what happens and the theory of evolution that explains why those laws happen.

Anyway while your idea sounds reasonable, it assumes constant sales throughout the thirteen hours. The ps4 is very supply constrained so it's first hour of sales are going to be much much greater, than its second hour, which will be greater than its third hour, and so on because people were initially worried it would sell out quick. It probably did have a very large shipment. But I don't think it will be anywhere near 26+ times as high as it would have sold sold in half an hour like you are assuming.
