I will admit that I am in favour of decriminalizing many illicit drugs, but still wonder if legalized prostitution will prevent things like Robert Pickton from happening again. (He killed upwards of 49 women just outside of Vancouver, most of them prostitutes.) Legalization may or may not stop pimps and human trafficking, but I'm more concerned about whether or not it will stop or reduce prostitute murders.

Prostitute murders are a thing because of prostitutes' status at the margins of society, just like killing the homeless or the mentally ill.

The question we all need to be asking is how many people *really* choose to sell their bodies for money if they have better options. Of course, that leeches into the messy question of how many people on the other end of a camera in porno videos are doing this with such a full degree of consent.

The high-class hooker is certainly a thing, but how representative is that of the average sex worker (even the average non-trafficked sex worker), much like how wide is the difference between well-known pornstars vs the countless interchangeable women all over the internet?

Who choses to do anything if they have better options?

Prostitution is a high paying job in which you make your own hours.

LOTS of people decide it is the better option.   Hell a lot more would if they didn't have to worry about being arrested, or being raped/robbed and not being able to report it.

I see no problem.

I like the Polish solution. Prostitution is legal, but being a pimp is illegal. Nobody can get profits from other people prostituting themselves. I think it's really a good solution, cause it allows for easier fight with human trafficking and forcing people to prostitution. The only thing that's missing in our country is social security and taxation for prostitutes.

Here is about the same (Brazil), and they are thinking about legalizing it, and make them pay tax and social security to retire.

Selling's legal. Fucking's legal. Why isn't selling fucking legal?

Because of the incentive it places on the black market to find people whose bodies they can sell.

But if it was legal there would by definition be no black market.  It would lesson the incentive to have a pimp, increase the ability to regulate, increase the autonomy of the body in question, offer legal recourse for people who are mistreated, and create competition among legitimate business people who would presumably operate under defined federal law.

You'd think so, but one thing to take into account is that a large chunk of working prostitutes, even in countries where it has been legalized, were brought into the country illegally. It's hard to suggest that many of these women are doing so wilfully.

Haven't saw a foreign prostitute in Brazil... and even the national ones I haven't saw being agaisnt their will.
