If we are talking about profits then isn't MS the winner this Gen? Aren't they the ONLY company currently making a profit at the end of every year? Or am I mistaken? Not sure that's why i am asking.

If we're talking about profits then I think Nintendo pretty handily won every generation.

No way....NO WAY the N64 made more money than the PS1 and there is NO way AT ALL the Gamecube came even CLOSE to the PS2 so it is impossible for them to have won every generation.

You are way more certain than you should be:

Of course that's the gaming divisions as a whole and I can't separate out the profits from handheld sales.  Still, if we're talking about profits, Nintendo wins pretty handily.

I never get tired of seeing this chart.  The "hardcore" have lost all perspective.

I doubt PS3 is going to get any more major exclusives but it's still getting multi platform games. It might take another 4 years but I think it could pass the Wii.

Dat 10 year plan.

You are mistaken. Nintendo made more profit than Sony and Microsoft

Even with the Wii being discontinued, it's not going to happen. PS4's price is too attractive and will divert and potential PS3 buyers (from next year on) to purchase it instead (especially by the time next fall rolls around). I'd predict the Wii to maintain a 5-10 mill lead after the dust settles.

The PS3 will be selling for many years more - it's still priced way higher right now that the PS2 was for most of its lifetime.

No, they won two generations and Nintendo won three as it stands today. You can't ignore consoles before Sony, unless you're a fan boy. But they have sold more home consoles overall, which is impressive given that Nintendo was around longer.

Nintendo may have won three gens, but the SNES didn't pull ahead of the Genesis until 1994 when Sega was shifting towards their next system.

According to the OP, sales are sales, including the PS3 overtaking the Wii in the same situation

Oh I know, you're right. But most people don't realize that the SNES was NOT a dominant console and nearly lost.

Indeed.  Sega may have still won in the US or it was very close.  The SNES crushed in Japan though and that pushed it ahead worldwide.

Can't believe nobody said this yet, but the genesis came out 2 years before the SNES so yea it took them a little while to make up the difference and the genesis did pretty well.  Genesis was competing with the NES for quite a while not the SNES.

I love how obsessed sony fans are with "WINNING!!!" everything. It's like their games just aren't that fun so they must find another way to enjoy their Sony fandom.. By constantly gloating about how much "THEY WIN!" even though Sony's success has absolutely nothing to do with them personally (and even when they sell the most they usually lose millions in the process). So.. yea.. GO SONY!

^ This is so true lol... They forget that the console makers' (large corporations) first goal is to make a profit and to satisfy shareholders rather than be championed by silly fanboys in terms of who reached so many millions first. Fanboys need to take up a hobby or a sport to release all that emotion and energy pent up inside. Still very entertaining to read though!!!

You do know gaming is a hobby?

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

This is very true but sometimes people spend more time arguing and defending their choice of purchased console than actually gaming on it, it would appear.
