Forums - General - What's your credit card and why is it best for you?

I never use my debit card anymore. Bills are paid by my credit card, which I pay off online through my checking account as soon as I get the email notification that my statement has been posted. Debit cards are much more risky, as you don't have to pay if your credit card information gets stolen.

I like that all my purchases are right there on the statement and that reoccurring bills are paid automatically. I also love pay-at-the-pump when getting gas every week. As far as shopping goes, Amazon and Newegg can have my babies.

My CC is just a bank Visa. No annual fee, reward points can go to a bunch of stuff, though I almost always cash out as Amazon gift cards, which I often use around Christmas. I'm gonna wait this year, though, and maybe save points up for a PS4 next year.

But seriously, i won't get a credit card because i don't think they are worth it. It's so easy to get into debt with that bit of plastic. I would rather use my own money thanks.

Not like it matters now, but i'm from London, England.

Problem with that is... if you don't get a credit card, you don't build up a positive credit hisotry.  Which if you don't have a credit history you may as well have a shitty credit history.

Then your stuck unable to get a house loan at a good rate... if at all.

I have one credit card that i use for bigger purchases, and i pay it off in full at the end of the month.

This is 100% true.  If you don't have credit cards (in house accounts or general) you can't show a credit history and you will be turned down for loans to buy a house or a new vehicle.  Credit cards are not evil at all.  All you have to do is buy things you can afford, or buy things you can afford on 0% interest and pay in full before the deadline.  You just need to pay it off every month (that you use it) and then it never costs you anything and skyrockets your credit score so you can get car and house loans at really low rates and you won't be turned away.  Try explaining to a fiancee / wife why you can't get yourself a house or new car that is absolutley needed...yeah trust me I know people that has happened to, and you don't want it to.

Anyways I have several.  The one I ge t the most reward points is actually likely the playstation card believe it or not.  Sometimes you can sign up for airline ones and get free tickets, but you have to check the fine print as sometimes they will tell you you have to spend thousands of dollars in like the first 2 months which may or may not be good for your situation.  Also if there is a place you shop at or somehwere you spend tons of money or recurring bills, you can look at getting a card through them and then you know you will always be getting bonus points nonstop.  And yeah, always pick one that gives you a year or 2 of 0% APR on everything.

But yeah, the only people who can legitimately claim they will never need a CC or they are evil and won't get any are people who are only going to need used cars and prefer to rent homes.  If you want to buy a house or a new car you have to be able to prove they can take the risk on you, which is through good credit history.  No credit = bad credit.

I live in Vancouver but I'm moving to Ontario. My credit card is with Scotia Bank.

Airlines - Air Canada Aeroplan, British Airways Executive, Lufthansa Miles and More, Emirates Skywards, Qatar Airways Q miles, American Airlines Aadvantage. The most useful is Emirates Skywards since its the easiest to get upgraded to Business class.

Hotels - I signed up for all the main one's but have only earned rewards for Marriott Rewards and Hilton Honors.

I don't understand that at all. Why can't they just use my bank account/ debit card history to determine if i can a mortgage/ loan?

Not like it matters, there is no way i could afford to own a house in London anyway. Most people can't, anymore. Damn housing bubbles!

Because a debit card is just a plastic check.  Checking accounts aren't reported to credit score companies.

Largely because well... they aren't credit.

The money disapears right away so you never build up debt.

Banks don't want to see if your responsible enough to not spend yourself into more debt.

They want to see if you are responsible enough to not spend now, when you have to pay off debt later.

Think of it this way.  If you have $5 in your pocket.  It's easy to spend 3-4 dollars on food and not go over or in debt.

If you owe someone $5 it's a lot harder to hold on to that money.  A lot more tempting to spend it.

I guess living in England you can go without a car... but quite honestly, it's worth building up a credit rating, you never know when you'll find yourself wanting to buy a house, a car, start up a buisness, etc.

You don't need a credit card to build up a credit rating.
Go to a place that "rents" something like Laptops and Televisions, pay a few bucks a week and you start to build on that credit rating.

I have no credit card, I use debit, I also have a very good credit rating to the point where I can buy a brand new car or home tomorrow if I wanted.
But that leaves me with less disposable income.
Also banks usually take how much you earn into account when giving you a loan too, the more you earn the less risky the endeavor.

Debit Card

- Never spend more than you actually own
- No fees
- No credit history required

I've never used a credit card and I hope it stays that way.

If you must know though, I use a Bank of America Debit card for most of my purchases.

I think its worth pointing out to the2real4mafol that you dont need a credit card to build up a good credit rating...there are multiple other ways to go about it.
